Pullen first in Outrigger
Waikiki King’s Race

Steve Pullen, second by one second a year ago, won the Outrigger's Waikiki King's Race yesterday by 23 seconds over fellow Australian Brett Tyack.

The raced consisted of a 10-mile beach run, 3-mile kayak race, 1-mile ocean swim and 1-mile paddleboard race.

Pullen's time was 43 minutes flat.

Japan's Fukio Sato was the first female finisher with a time of 55:09.

Chris Moore was the first Hawaii male finisher with a time of 47:04 and Hadley Gaffney was the first Hawaii female and third overall with a time of 1:00.10.

MIYASHIRO QUALIFIES: At Northfield, N.J., Marie Miyashiro of Honolulu finished the 36-hole qualifying for the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur golf tourney with a 78-82-160 total to advance to today's first round of match play.

Kerry Postillion of Burr Ridge, Ill. took medalist honors with a 69-74-143.

Kailua's Lani Batey did not qualify after shooting 89-94-183.

HEALANI A WINNER: Healani Canoe Club won the E Lau Hoe women's long-distance race from Magic Island to Pokai Bay yesterday in a time of 4 hours, 4 minutes and 21 seconds.

The winning crew included Colleen Chun, Heather Cottrell, Karin Hansen, Melvia Hardy, Deneen McNicol, Gail Murakami, Robin Nonaka, Nikki Queryl, Laurie Seto and Marion Yasuda.

The masters division was won by Kalihi Kai in 4:32:33.

Paddling were Loriaynn Bean, Leslie Cobron, Chana Dimitt-Chapman, Dibora Gil, Jo Hand, Carmen Ladao, Roshalle Lewis, Jeannie Martinson, Folly Murdock, Jenny Smith, Linda Tseu and Lorenn Walker.

PUGET SOUND SCORES LATE: Puget Sound (2-1) scored twice in the last 11 minutes to defeat Hawaii Pacific University (1-2), 3-1, in the final game of the HPU Women's Kick-Off Classic yesterday at HPU's Windward Campus field.

Jannicke Snildal's goal at the 19-minute mark had pulled the Sea Warriors into a 1-1 tie.

GIOVANETTI PREVAILS: Theresa Giovanetti won two races against David Coburn Saturday night at Hawaii Raceway Park to claim the title of Hawaii's Fastest Teenager.

Coburn, a Campbell High School student, left too soon and got a red light in the first race.

Giovanetti, a Punahou student, won the second race with a time of 8.12 seconds (162.98 miles per hour) to Coburn's 8.68 seconds (156.19 mph).

In the NAPA Street Shootout, Steve Feller, a tourist from Pleasant Valley, N.Y., drove his Mustang rent-a-car to victory and won $350.

HPU SOFTBALL MEETING: Hawaii Pacific University students interested in playing softball for HPU this spring should attend a preliminary meeting Saturday at 1 p.m. at Windward Campus softball field.

Prospective players should bring their class schedule and writing materials.
