Hawaii is the first site outside Japan to host
the 500-year-old self-carved statue of Rennyo Shonin.
A service commemorating the 500th anniversary
of the death of the priest Rennyo Shonin, considered
the architect of the Hongwanji, was held yesterday
at the Honpa Hongwanji Temple on Pali Highway.
Above, the Rennyo Shonin Go-ei (statue) is passed
from the Rev. Kenjo Muraoka to Bishop Chikai
Yosemori. Below, Eva Yamashita helps her mother,
Mikiko Hirohata, tour a related exhibit at the temple.
