Wait for electric meter
adds to power worries

I called Hawaiian Electric because of power surge problems. A guy came out and said they would have to put a meter in and that someone would come that night. No one showed up. I called the next day and they said I had to wait because they didn't have any meters available. Why does a big company like Hawaiian Electric not have enough meters to go around? What happenes if my house burned down while I was waiting for a meter?

Hawaiian Electric spokesman Fred Kobashikawa apologized for your experience.

When you called, "we did have an insufficient supply of metering equipment," he said, partly because some of the meters were being repaired. Since then, additional equipment that had been ordered, plus the repaired meters, are in stock, so "now we have an adequate supply."

If you or anyone sees or hears anything unusual with your electrical lines or equipment, Kobashikawa said to call Heco's 24-hour trouble line at 548-7961.
