Juliet Sadama-Uemura works mostly with people from their 80s to more than 100 years old, but lately has begun seeing more young people come to Maunalani Nursing Center. A younger mix at Maunalani
"We've been getting them in their late 30s and early 40s," Sadama-Uemura said. The change is part of a national trend toward short-term hospital stays.
Sadama-Uemura has been director of social services at Beverly Manor Convalescent Center in Kalihi Valley and also a social worker at the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific and the state Department of Public Safety.
She got a bachelor's degree in social work at California State Polytechnic University in Pomona and a master's in public health at the University of Hawaii.
Maunalani Nursing Center, located at the top of Wilhelmina Rise in Honolulu, has 100 beds.
