A younger mix at Maunalani

Juliet Sadama-Uemura works mostly with people from their 80s to more than 100 years old, but lately has begun seeing more young people come to Maunalani Nursing Center.

"We've been getting them in their late 30s and early 40s," Sadama-Uemura said. The change is part of a national trend toward short-term hospital stays.

Sadama-Uemura has been director of social services at Beverly Manor Convalescent Center in Kalihi Valley and also a social worker at the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific and the state Department of Public Safety.

She got a bachelor's degree in social work at California State Polytechnic University in Pomona and a master's in public health at the University of Hawaii.

Maunalani Nursing Center, located at the top of Wilhelmina Rise in Honolulu, has 100 beds.
