What ever happened when enemy submarines shelled Kauai, Maui and the Big Island some three weeks after the Pearl Harbor attack? Enemy subs aimed
at Hawaii portsThe Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported on its Dec. 31, 1941, front page that three islands were shelled the night before by vessels believed to be Japanese submarines. No casualties occurred and damage was slight.
The War Department confirmed "enemy submarines" shelled ports of Hilo; Nawiliwili, Kauai; and Kahului. The Kauai shelling set a cane field on fire. Damage at Hilo was limited to a small shed. No damage was reported at Kahului.
