Wahine to open season
against Illinois State

The third Aston's Imua Wahine Volleyball Challenge kicks off the season for the host University of Hawaii and three visiting teams tomorrow at the Special Events Arena.

Illinois State, the defending Missouri Valley Conference champion, and Kansas State open the tournament with a noon match.

The Redbirds are coached by Punahou graduate Julie Morgan while Jim McLaughlin, former Southern Cal men's coach, is in his first year with the Wildcats.

Kansas State, ranked No. 31 in the preseason poll, plays the University of San Francisco at 5:30 p.m. The 11th-ranked Wahine and Illinois State conclude the tripleheader with a 7:30 p.m. match.

Sunday's schedule has Hawaii playing USF at 1 p.m.; USF against Illinois State at 5 p.m., and Hawaii facing Kansas State at 7 p.m. The Wahine have won both previous Challenge titles.

All of Hawaii's matches this weekend will be broadcast live on KFVE television and KCCN 1420-AM radio.

Upper level seats are available for $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and $4 for UH students and students ages 4 through high school.

SMALL-COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Three of the four Hawaii Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's volleyball teams open play this weekend at the Hawaiian Style Classic Hilo's at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

Three-time defending NAIA champion Brigham Young University-Hawaii headlines the nine-team field, which begins pool play at 9 a.m. tomorrow.

The Seasiders are the unanimous preseason pick at No. 1.

Pool A consists of BYUH, Biola and Western Oregon. Competing in Pool B are Hawaii Pacific, Cal Poly Pomona and Minnesota-Morris.

Host University of Hawaii at Hilo is in Pool C along with Bellarmine of Kentucky and St. Martin's of Washington.

Play continues through Saturday's 7 p.m. championship match.

Daily ticket prices are $5 for adults, $2 for students and seniors.

The Chaminade Silverswords start their campaign on the mainland with two matches tomorrow against Western State College and UC Davis in Grand Junction, Colo.

HAPUNA ROUNDUP SET: The third annual Hapuna Roundup Invitational Pro-Am golf tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Hapuna Course.

Four-member teams comprised of one professional and three amateurs will compete for individual and team prizes.
