Fujita, Kop in U.S. Senior
Amateur Championships

Two veteran Hawaii golfers, Art Fujita and Wendall Kop of Honolulu, captured the two local qualifying spots and will represent Hawaii in the 43rd Senior Amateur Championships at the Atlanta Golf Club in Bridgehampton, N.Y., Sept. 20-25.

Fujita and Kop each shot a 75 yesterday in the local qualifying held at the Waialae Country Club.

The alternates are Sonkyo Nomura (77), Jim Bowen (78), Paul Bellanca (79) and Fred Zane (80).

PADDLEBOARD RACE: The eighth annual Chart House Labor Day Paddleboard race will be held Sunday. The 4.6-mile event from Waimea Bay to Alii Beach starts at 11 a.m.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. at Waimea Bay. For additional information, call George Leigh at 638-9023.

PALMER WINS: Jay Palmer of Waialua won the lightweight title in Super Brawl V (Guam International Freestyle Martial Arts Tournament) last Saturday at the University of Guam field house.

Palmer defeated Cuba's Roberto Rodriquez with an arm bar submission.

DRAG RACES: Open street drag racing for all cars and bikes continues Friday night at Hawaii Raceway Park.

The gates open at 6 p.m. and admission is $8.

The first $10,000 shootout, a bracket race for all cars and bikes, starts at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The gates open at 4. Admission is $10. For more information, call 841-3724.

UH BASEBALL MEETING: There will be a general meeting for all students interested in trying out for the University of Hawaii baseball team Sept. 3 at 3:30 p.m. in the blue section directly behind home plate at Rainbow Stadium.

Prospective players must be full-time registered students at UH-Manoa. For further information, call 956-6247.

CUERVO BEACH TOURNAMENT: The Honolulu stop on the Cuervo Gold Beach Volleyball Tour is scheduled for Sept. 6-7 at Ft. DeRussy Beach.

Play is in men's and women's Gold, AAA and B, women's A, and coed open and coed unrated divisions.

The first- and second-place finishers in the men's and women's Gold division advance to the $30,000 National Finals, Oct. 25-26, at Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Fla.

All competitors must be at least 21 years of age. The registration fee is $75 for Gold, $50 for AAA and $40 for all other divisions.

BENEFIT GOLF TOURNEY: The Links To Literacy golf tournament will be held Sept. 9, with an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start at the Honolulu Country Club.

The event is a benefit for the Hawaii State Library Foundation.

The format is a three-person scramble. The tax-deductible entry fee for teams is $1,000 to $5,000 and $350 for individuals.

VULCAN TENNIS BENEFIT: The third annual Hilo Brokers Class Tennis tourney is Sept. 19-21 at the Edith Kanakaole Indoor Stadium and the outdoor courts at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and Waiakea High School.

Proceeds benefit the Vulcan tennis program.

Fees are $15 per player for singles, $30 per doubles team. The entry deadline is 5 p.m. Sept. 12.
