career with isle hotelsNicholas P. Bahouth, prominent retired hotel executive and community leader, died Thursday in Kalaheo, Kauai. He was 73. Bahouth retired from the Sheraton Hotels in 1987 after 17 years. In Hawaii, he served as general manager of the Sheraton Maui, Sheraton Kauai, Sheraton Coconut Beach, Sheraton Makaha and Sheraton Moana Surfrider.
He was also general manager of the Sheraton Hotels Townhouse in Los Angles, Calif., and the Sheraton Okinawa in Japan.
Sheraton Hotels President John Brogan remembers Bahouth as a manager who was there to meet the needs of the hotel guests and cared a lot about the people who worked with him and for him. Brogan was Bahouths supervisor when the Waikiki-Sheraton Hotel opened in 1971.
Bahouth also was a manager for the Honolulu Elks Club, the Outrigger Canoe Club and the Kahala Hilton.
A resident of Kauai for many years, he was active in business and community organizations there. He was a founder of the Rotary Club of Kapaa and its first president; a founding board member of the Poipu Beach Resort Assn.; president of the Hawaii Hotel Association, Kauai Chapter; and Hawaii Visitors Bureau, Kauai Chapter board member.
He also served on the Kauai County Salary Commission and was a board member of the Kauai Food Bank and Kauai Senior Centers.
He is survived by his wife Candace A.; sons Jack, Jed and Gerald; daughters Judy Dyne, Jill McAndrew, Christine Sanne and Michelle Bahouth; sister Martha Lincoln; brother Frank; and eight grandchildren.
Memorial services in Hawaii will be held at 10 a.m. Sept. 8, at Platt Restaurant in Poipu, Kauai. A tree-planting memorial will follow at the Sheraton Kauai Hotel.
Funeral services will be in Fayetteville, N.Y.
