Konishiki's 8-7 mark
gets him promotion

TOKYO -- Konishiki, or Salevaa Atisanoe from Hawaii, was promoted seven notches to No. 2 maegashira for next month's Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament, according to rankings released today by the Japan Sumo Association.

Konishiki earned the promotion with a 8-7 record in Nagoya.

Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani from Hawaii, switched places with Takanonami to hold the more prestigious east position after the ozeki chalked up 10 wins in July against Takanonami's nine.

Kerbox third in
Catalina Classic race

LOSANGELES -- Buzzy Kerbox of Maui finished third in the 21st Catalina Classic Paddleboard Race yesterday.

George Kabris of Ventura, Calif., won the 32-mile, unlimited division. Brian Zeller of San Diego was third.

"I wanted to win this one so bad so I could retire and never have to do one of these again," said Kerbox, who will be 41 next month.

"This may be my last time, I'm getting too old for this."

ANOTHERWINFORSALTER:Brian Salter chalked up another victory when he won the Mid-Pacific Road Runners Hickam 15-kilometer event at Hickam Air Force Base yesterday with a time of 49 minutes, 36 seconds.

Salter fashioned a three-minute lead by the time he hit the finish line ahead of runner-up Jim Eastman (52:55).

In the women's division, Sonia Bartkus (1:06:15) was first with Joann Harwood (1:07:53) second.

VARELA BREEZES: Gustavo Varela won the Holo Malie 5.2-mile run from Aloha Tower to Magic Island and back yesterday in 20 minutes, 51 seconds. James Sclabassi was second in 32:05.

Jody Mendez took the women's division in 37:35. Lauren Jaynes was runner-up in 38:25.

KELEKOMA COMES FIRST: At Acid Drops, Kauai, Daniel Kelekoma of Kauai won the Poipu Pro surf meet and $500 with his first-place finish yesterday.

The Poipu Pro was the first event in the two-event Garden Isle Pro-Am Series.

MANUIA BY NINE: At Waikoloa, Hawaii, Jaysen Manuia of Hilo led from start to finish to win the 54-hole Big Island Amateur Championship played on the Waikoloa Beach and King's golf courses this weekend.

BOX CAR DISPLAY: American Box Car Racing International member's box cars are on display at Kahala Mall through Wednesday.
