Elvis fans
in Blue HawaiiTHE headline on the Hawaii Inc. business section of the Star-Bulletin yesterday read, "Hotel occupancy down again." Don't blame it on Elvis! Waikiki has been filled with the King's fans, marking in the place he loved to visit the 20th anniversary of his death. This weekend is Kauai's turn. Some 370 Elvis Presley fans from Great Britain are filling the lobby and watering holes in the Aston Kauai Beachboy Hotel, and another big batch is staying at Aston's Islander on the Beach. Pity the Coco Palms never reopened after the hurricane, since that's where "Blue Hawaii" was filmed and you just know that's where true fans of the King would love to stay. In fact, one couple set their wedding for this afternoon on the private lagoon, and three more are renewing their vows, all to honor Elvis. A pity they missed the full moon or you know there would have been Elvis sightings ...
FORMER Mayor Frank Fasi had no problem with Scruples Wednesday night. He stopped by the club of that name co-owned by attorney David Schutter and Fred Piluso to pass along his best wishes to the two as they celebrated their birthdays together. Fasi and Piluso are paisans. Schutter and Fasi have been on the opposite side of some issues in the past, but were all cozy and smiles at the party. The attorney, still in a wheelchair following a small stroke, is back from rehab in Boulder, Colo. He maintains his law office in Honolulu, but hasn't appeared in court since his stroke ...
REAL estate man Dave Lewis knows full well that wife Ann qualifies as a professional shopper. He points out that back in December when she was Christmas shopping, Ann spent money so fast that she was carded -- one establishment assumed that someone had stolen her AX card. (Lewis: "I'd have been better off!") But yesterday Lewis got her AX bill and there was zero payment due. He did what any good husband did. He had it framed as evidence of a one-time event ... The tough go shopping
THE experience of Lewis reminds me of the time a localite who shall remain anonymous told me that someone stole his wife's credit card, but he didn't report it because, "The thief was spending less than she did." This same gent was embarking on a hike with his wife and some friends through Haleakala. Asked if he weren't worried for his safety he replied, "Not me. If we turn up missing I know Carol & Mary will charter a helicopter to find us." ...
TWO other stories in yesterday's paper caught my eye -- one was a front page story on the Reeves family reunion in Kuliouou which begged one question, and sure enough, it was answered in the 13th and penultimate paragraph: Keanu Reeves is related to the clan ... The second was about actress Sigourney Weaver playing a "very wicked, very disturbed" evil stepmother in a film called "Snow White: A Tale of Terror." She allowed that her 7-year-old daughter, Charlotte, wouldn't be allowed to see it because she's "not old enough." No word on whether Weaver's mother-in-law, localite Ann Simpson, would be excluded also. Weaver is married to Ann and Jack Simpson's son, Jim ...
WHILE in Hawaii overseeing filming of "Godzilla" on the North Shore, co-executive producer and writer Dean Devlin is enjoying the palatial digs of the late Paul Mitchell in Lanikai. The estate has been on the market for many years -- current asking price $12 million. Devlin could afford it -- he was also writer/producer of the megabucks hit "Independence Day" ... which should make him financially independent for life ... Financial Independence
