Mountain bike races at
Waimea Valley Bike Park

Cash prizes totaling $2,500 will be up for grabs in the inaugural No Fear Mauka Enduro mountain bike race Aug. 31 at Waimea Valley Bike Park.

The event is sanctioned by NORBA (National Off Road Bicycling Association) with points accumulated carried over into national competition.

There will be two types of competition, an enduro and a downhill.

The enduro is a mass-start race held on a circuit course comprised of forest roads, single-track trails, descents and climbs. The intent is to show all-around bike handling and conditioning.

The downhill is a time trial of sustained descending, demonstrating bike handling at high speed.

The event starts at 10 a.m. There is no admission charge.

BYUH WOMEN NO. 1: Three-time defending national champion Brigham Young University-Hawaii is No. 1 in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics preseason women's volleyball poll released yesterday.

The Seasiders received all nine first-place votes and 225 points.

Hawaii Pacific is ranked No. 15 with 103 points.

The teams open their 1997 season in the Hawaiian Style Classic, Aug. 29-30, at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo.

HPU MEN RANKED: The Hawaii Pacific University men's soccer team is ranked No. 19 in the NAIA preseason poll released yesterday.

The Sea Warriors will open their intercollegiate schedule with a match at Brigham Young University-Hawaii Sept. 6 starting at 4 p.m.

VULCAN ALUMNAE MATCH: The University of Hawaii at Hilo women's volleyball team will play its alumnae Saturday at 7:15 p.m. at the UHH Gym.

Tickets cost $5 for adults and $2 for children. Alumnae interested in playing should call 974-7698. For other information, call 974-7520.

The annual Vulcan Booster Club Welcome Back Picnic is tomorrow at 5 p.m. Cost is $5.

CORPUZ HONORED: Nando Corpuz was named the most outstanding overall lifter at the 15th annual Waialua Health Club Powerlifting Meet last Saturday.

He squatted 585 pounds, bench pressed 385 pounds and dead lifted 500 pounds for a total of 1,470 pounds.

Keola Silva won the most outstanding teen and the most improved lifter awards.

Stancy Tantog was named the most outstanding female lifter.

CHAMINADE SIGNINGS: Four players have signed letters of intent to play softball for Chaminade University this year.

They are Melisha Fernandez, a catcher from Waianae High School; Jayna Lee, a catcher, infielder and outfielder from Hawaii Baptist Academy; Vanessa Villegas, a shortstop, and Christie Manning, a pitcher, both from Bishop Amat High School in California.

THREE JOIN VULCANS: Point guard Maceo Thomas from Monterey Peninsula College (Calif.) and centers Jes Hansen from Copenhagen, Denmark, and John Smith from Phoenix have signed letters of intent to play basketball for the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

Thomas, 6-foot-2, averaged eight points per game in junior college. Smith is a 6-9 freshman who was an all-region selection at Carl Hayden High School. Hansen, a 6-8 freshman, played club basketball and averaged 36 points and 18 rebounds per game last year.

WAILEA INVITATIONAL: To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the Wailea Golf Club is hosting the Wailea Invitational.

It starts Wednesday with a practice round. The 54-hole event begins the next day.
