Diabetes screening: People under 45 who are either a sibling, parent, child, niece, nephew, aunt or grandchild of someone with Type I Diabetes (juvenile type-diagnosed before the age of 40), are eligible for a free screening by calling 531-6886.

Donors needed: Platelets, blood components that aid in clotting, are needed for patients with blood diseases such as leukemia and aplastic anemia. Donation is painless and safe. Adults ages 18-65 who weigh at least 110 pounds and are in good health are asked to call the St. Francis Medical Center at 547-6403.

Family planning: Hawaii Department of Health offers confidential services that include pregnancy testing and counseling, examinations, checkups, information and birth control supplies. For a clinic near you, call 737-6311; on the Neighbor Islands, call ASK-2000.

Low-cost family planning: Rural Oahu Family Planning Clinics offer confidential services including birth control supplies and pregnancy testing in Waipahu and Wahiawa. Call 675-0070.

National Multiple Sclerosis Society: Free counseling by telephone is available for people living with MS. Call 531-4127 or 800-FIGHT-MS. Support group meets the first Thursday of each month at the Kukui Health Building.

"Patches of Memory": St. Francis Medical Center provides materials for people to create a name patch in memory of someone lost to AIDS. Volunteers at the center, St. Francis-West and St. Francis Hospice will sew the patches into three name quilts for World AIDS Day 1997. Patch packets with instructions, background material and swatches are free. Call 547-6231.

EXERCISE

Expectant mothers exercise program: Isometric-isotonic exercises that tone those areas of the body stressed by pregnancy. Classes meet three times a week for four weeks. Cost: $47 for 12 classes. Information at 536-3556.

Fifty-Plus Fitness Association: Scenic ocean and Diamond Head trail walk/run, 8 a.m. every second Saturday of the month, Kapiolani Park Bandstand. Wear good running or walking shoes. The course will be approximately 4 miles long, lasting one hour. Location may change. Call 536-4006.

Fitness Walking Program: Laura Stern leads a group in warm-ups, a 50-minute walk through Waimea Valley and a cool-down exercise, 7 a.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays. First session is free. Annual pass is $40 ($70 per couple), includes park admission. Call 638-8511.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Free diabetes screening: People under 45 who have a relative with Type 1 diabetes are eligible for a free screening, part of a six-year study sponsored by the National Institute of Health. Your blood will be tested for antibodies linked with an elevated risk for developing diabetes. People found to be at risk may participate in the Diabetes Prevention Trial, which explores whether diabetes can be delayed or prevented. Call 531-6886.

Research on women's health: Women ages 50-79 needed for the Women's Health Initiative, a long-term study sponsored by the National Institute of Health. WHI looks into the prevention of heart disease, cancer and bone fracture, and the value of hormone treatment and calcium and vitamin D supplements. Women must be in good health, past menopause, and expect to live on Oahu for the next three years. Call Women's Health Hawaii at 547-9814.

Patient care research project: National Cancer Institute and Pacific Health Research Institute are studying whether screening people for cancer of the prostate, lung, colon or ovaries will reduce the number of deaths from these cancers each year. Volunteers ages 55-74 can call PLCO (Prostate Lung Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial) at 545-3660 or 1-800-834-7500.

Yoga for diabetics: Bikram's Yoga College offers a month of free lessons for diabetics who participate in a study of the effects of yoga. Participants must commit to four or five days a week. Call 737-5519. Hatha yoga lessons are $10, or $80 for 10.
