premium peppersIsland Fresh green bell peppers have a mild, sweet flavor and a crisp, exceedingly juicy flesh. They are an excellent source of vitamin C, and contain fair amounts of vitamin A and small amounts of calcium, phosphorous and iron.
Slice off the tops, remove the seeds and stuff the bell-shaped sweet peppers with a variety of fillings.
Or top a pizza with sliced bell peppers and fresh tomatoes for 59 cents a pound to Times Royal Card holders (89 cents to others), 69 cents at IGH, 99 cents at Star Markets. Other pizza toppers include Island Fresh Maui onions for 99 cents a pound at Foodland and Star, plus sliced fresh mushrooms, lean Italian sausage, green onions, minced fresh garlic, Italian herbs and grated mozzarella cheese.
Fruit smoothie devotees should be on the look out for apple bananas, cantaloupe, nectarines and strawberries at summer best-buy prices.
Nectarines are 57 cents a pound at Safeway, 75 cents at IGH, 89 cents at Star and 69 cents to Times Royal Card holders ($1.19 to others).
Other sweet deals: honeydew melon for 39 cents a pound at Star, Crenshaw melon for 79 cents at Times, and large O'Henry peaches for 87 cents at Sack N Save.
