McAneeley’s still
a good skate

"IT was a fun week," said Waikiki Prince Hotel Manager Ted McAneeley after taking part in Charles Schulz's 23rd Senior World Hockey Tournament in Santa Rosa, Calif. Schulz is the "Peanuts" comic strip creator, originally from Canada, who loves hockey. He participated in the 70-and-over category, said McAneeley, who is also from Canada and played in the National Hockey League for Edmonton in the '70s. Schulz had 1,200 players on 56-teams. "I was able to sneak a couple of goals in," Ted said . . .

BEER is Dave Campbell's business. Campbell, 31, brewed his first beer when he was a senior at Punahou. His passion for brewing led him to make it his profession. He has operated Oahu Homebrew Supply in Kakaako for many years. Dave has teamed with Sam Choy and will be host for a beer tasting with pupus at Choy's Breakfast, Lunch and Crab Monday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m; $25. Dave will give guests the scoop on five brews from Choy's vats . . .

FOR 27 years I've been driving a 1968 Mustang convertible. Now I am ready to let the loyal, classic Mustang go, because I am the proud owner of an almost new 1997 Lexus. When I tried the Lexus, I felt like Rip Van Winkle. These newfangled machines have buttons on the key holder that open and lock the doors and trunk. What's more, cool air comes right out of the dashboard. And with the headlights switch set on auto, the lights come on by themselves when it's dark. Amazing! . . .

Kawananakoa loved music

IN his eulogy for Edward "Dudie" Kawananakoa, who could have been Hawaii's king if the monarchy existed, Monsigner Charles A. Kekumano said that Kawananakoa, for a man of his status, always had his feet on the ground. "He was a man of good common sense and a man of musical joy." The monsignor emphasized Kawananakoa's love for Hawaiian music and said, "He played the bass fiddle. Whenever there was music there was a smile on Dudie's face" . . .

KAHALA Moon owner-chef Kelvin Wong is overwhelmed that Jeremiah Tower, owner-chef of the acclaimed Stars Restaurant in San Francisco, will cook for Kahala Moon's third anniversary dinner Monday. Alan Wong is part of the all-star chef lineup. Robert Cazimero will sing and play the baby grand; $100 . . . Councilwoman Donna Kim and Kathy Kagawa had birthdays recently, so golfing pals Lorrie Stone, Sharon Weiner, Meredith Ching and Linda Wong took them to dine at Alan Wong's. From her Kahaluu fishpond, Linda brought a huge crab, which Wong steamed and served with sauces . . .

THE ANNUAL Canlis employees reunion was held Thursday at Hackfeld's in Liberty House Ala Moana. Canlis' popular manager David Hill and his wife, Dottie, were surrounded by former waitresses Fumi Isobe, Skoshi Uyemura, Aiko Kumagai, Michi Yogi, Reiko Kolaczynski, Cora Higashiguchi and Irene Kawachi. Hackfeld manager Armond Vincent said Canlis gave him the inspiration to go into the food biz. The Frau and I had a post-wedding dinner there in 1974 with about 20 people. My pal from childhood, Tim Smythe, shocked all by picking up the tab . . .
