An Honest
Day’s Word

I tell ya, that Switzer
guy’s a real pistol

BARRY Switzer always has been a loose cannon but this is just a little too hilarious . . . and other observations.

Gun safety was required study my freshman year in high school. It was part of shop class and I'm positive that one of the first rules of proper weapon storage was to always keep your firearm loaded and in your carry-on luggage.

Actually, professional coaches these days probably need a loaded .38 in their possession just to keep up with the players. After all, Mao said that true power comes from the barrel of a gun, right?

So far, there is no confirmation from the Dallas Cowboys that Warren Zevon will write the score for the team's highlight film, but the song "Lawyers, Guns and Money" could run with the opening credits, I guess.

Don't look now, but Ken Griffey Jr. is on pace to hit 39 home runs this year.

Just once, I'd like to see a city or state tell a baseball team, "Ya know, your lease to OUR stadium is up at the end of the season. You'll have 30 days to pack it up and get out."

Actually, there is a grass-roots effort in Minnesota to do just that to the Twins. Much of the state is farming country and it's kind of a kick in the teeth to have the team owner, Carl Pohlad, a billionaire banker, come begging the people to build him a new stadium. I wonder how many family farms the guy has foreclosed on. Hey Carl, build it yourself, dude.

It's August and the dog days are upon us. September is when the suits start to pay attention and use their luxury boxes, but this is the month that really separates the contenders from the pretenders. Deion Sanders should show up at the Cowboys' training camp any day now. When it comes to baseball, the guy is the best defensive back in the league. I'll give Deion this much, though, at least he's unarmed.

Don't look now, but Mark McGwire is on pace to hit 42 home runs this year. Maybe not.

I read where the University of Hawaii would like to join the Pacific 10 Conference if it should ever decide to leave the WAC. Isn't that kind of like the tail wagging the dog? If anything, the WAC would clip UH, don'tcha think?

On first glance it would look as though the Pac 10 is out of Hawaii's league, so to speak. But then, the school motto at Arizona State University -- at least on book store T-shirts -- is "Truth, Knowledge and a Great Tan," so maybe the Rainbows are qualified after all.

Don't you just love guys like Shawn Kemp, soon to be formerly of the Seattle SuperSonics? The guy went to one year of college, got a job, got a real nice raise from his boss after only modest success and now says he wants to leave his employer because he doesn't get any respect. Seems his boss gave another guy more money.

Check me if I'm wrong, but if you get paid three-point-something million bucks a year to do your job, get to stay in the best hotels when you travel on business and fly on a chartered company-paid-for plane when you do so, isn't that fairly respectable? Unlike money, respect only comes when you earn it.

On the other side of the coin, Joe Dumars signed a contract the other day that likely will keep him in a Pistons uniform for the rest of his career. Too bad that won't be longer than one or two years. Grant Hill might be the star of the team, but Dumars is its heart and soul. Always has been, always will be.

Opening day of the NFL season is only 25 days away. I don't know who will get to the Super Bowl, but if someone tells you the Cowboys have a good chance to win the whole shootin' match, I'd believe it.
