Specials

Five writing workshops will be held 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. tomorrow, University of Hawaii, East-West Center, Jefferson Hall. Participants choose one from the following topics: fiction, nonfiction or children's writing, how to self-publish a book, and writing and publishing on the Internet. Cost: $49. Participants can also have lunch with literary agent Roger Jellinek, 12:45-1:45 p.m. Bring a brown bag lunch. Register at 395-1161.

The Hawaii Literary Arts Council is taking nominations for the Elliott Cades Award for Literature to be presented to poetry, drama, fiction or literary nonfiction writers. Two awards will be given: one to a writer who has published a "significant body of work of exceptional quality" and the other to a writers who has "produced a small body of work showing unusual talent and promise." Nominations, including a letter explaining why the person should be considered, and supporting materials must be send to: Cades Award Committee, HLAC, P.O. Box 11213, Moiliili Station, Honolulu, Hawaii 96828-0123. Deadline: Aug. 18.
