WEDNESDAY: Commerce Department releases retail sales for July. 8:30 a.m.; Labor releases producer prices for July. 8:30 a.m.

THURSDAY: Labor releases unemployment claims, consumer price reports for July. 8:30 a.m.; Commerce releases business inventories for June. 8:30 a.m.; Federal Reserve releases industrial production for July. 9:15 a.m.; Freddie Mac releases weekly mortgage rates. Time to be announced.

SUNDAY, Aug. 10:

Beijing -- U.S. Security Adviser Sandy Berger visits Beijing and Beidaihe for meetings with Chinese leaders in preparation for Jiang/Clinton summit. Through Aug. 13.

Johannesburg, South Africa -- National women's day.

Christiansted, St. Croix -- 500 Rastas from around the world expected at third annual Rastafari Gathering, seven-day convention.

New York -- Lifeguard begins 240-mile solo row around Long Island to raise funds for breast cancer research. Row is to take about six days.

MONDAY, Aug: 11:

Tirana, Albania -- Italian-led multinational force completes withdrawal from Albania.

Stockholm, Sweden -- U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan visits. Through Aug. 12.

Singapore -- ASEAN foreign ministers meet to discuss next steps in effort to resolve Cambodian crisis.

Montreux, Switzerland -- U.N.-sponsored talks on Cyprus. Through Aug. 19.

Washington -- Supreme Court in recess until October.

Washington -- Congress in recess until September.

Washington -- Trial of Sgt. Maj. Gene McKinney for accused sexual harassment scheduled to resume with testimony by a fifth woman.

Memphis, Tenn. -- Start of Elvis Week. This year marks 20th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death.

Kansas City, Mo. -- Retrial of former Missouri House Speaker Bob Griffin on corruption charges.

Phoenix -- Trial date for William Ferguson, co-conspirator in murder of armored car driver and theft of more than $500,000 from van.

Los Angeles -- Trial in suit by Foodmaker restaurants against Vons Grocery Co. in connection with the 1993 E-coli infections in the Pacific Northwest that killed one and made hundreds ill.

Los Angeles -- Congressman Jay Kim and his wife are expected to enter guilty pleas to charges they received illegal campaign contributions.

Los Angeles -- National Association of Police Organizations holds 19th annual convention at Biltmore Hotel, with Attorney General Janet Reno among the speakers.

Potosi, Mo. -- Mental competency hearing for death row inmate Roosevelt Pollard, who won stay of execution earlier this year.

Roanoke, Va. -- Trial of Javier Cruz and co-defendants in a cocaine smuggling operation. Cruz, who went on to become an undercover informant and infiltrated Colombian cocaine cartels, is likely to plead guilty.

Warm Springs, Va. -- Fourth U.S. District Court of Appeals hears arguments in challenge to FDA regulation of tobacco.

Charlottesville, Va. -- Court appearance for U.Va. basketball player Courtney Alexander to answer charge of assaulting his girlfriend.

TUESDAY, Aug: 12:

Helsinki, Finland -- U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan visits. Through August 14.

Washington -- President Clinton travels to St. Louis to attend Democratic fund-raiser.

Los Angeles -- City Council expected to take up matter of approving Bernard Parks, Mayor Riordan's choice for police chief.

Green Bay, Wis., and Richmond, Va. -- Shareholders of Fort Howard and James River corporations to vote on proposed merger of the papermaking giants.

Salisbury, N.C. -- Workers at Fieldcrest Cannon to decide whether to be represented by union. Elections also held in Kannapolis. Through Aug. 13.

Red Rock State Park, N.M. -- 76th annual Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial, featuring American Indian arts and crafts, rodeos, dance performances and parades. Through Aug. 17.

Milford, N.H. -- Seven Brookline residents scheduled for court dates on charges stemming from July 4th Revolt (bell-ringers maced) in Brookline.

Georgetown, Ky. -- First Sienna minivan rolls off the assembly line at the Georgetown Toyota plant; first auto plant in the U.S. to simultaneously build a car and minivan on the same assembly line.

New Kent, Va. -- Preliminary hearing for Philadelphia 76ers star Allen Iverson on drug and firearms possession charges. Iverson is not expected to attend.

WEDNESDAY, Aug: 13:

New Delhi, India -- Veterans of India's freedom struggle lead parade marking 50th anniversary of independence from Britain. Celebrations in Parliament also planned.

Santa Fe, N.M. -- New Mexico Supreme Court hearing to consider lawsuit challenging Gov. Gary Johnson's administration putting into effect a welfare-to-work program without legislative approval.

Potosi, Mo. -- Donald Reese scheduled to be executed for the June 1986 shooting deaths of four men at a wildlife reserve.

Los Angeles -- Hearing in malpractice lawsuit filed by rapper Hammer against his former legal firm.

Santa Ana, Calif. -- Decision by judge whether to release 5,000 pages of transcripts relating to Orange County's bankruptcy lawsuit against Merrill Lynch.

THURSDAY, Aug: 14:

Moscow -- Two Russian astronauts head for Earth from space station Mir in the same Soyuz capsule they arrived in.

Santa Monica, Calif. -- Hearing in continuing effort to determine whether some items seized from O.J. Simpson as part of his wrongful death judgment were really his to begin with.

Richmond, Va. -- Kathleen Willey, former social secretary for President Clinton, is scheduled to appear for a deposition by attorneys for Paula Jones. Jones' lawyers want to question Ms. Willey based on reports that the president made sexual overtures to her in the White House in 1993.

Las Cruces, N.M. -- New Mexico State University's 2nd annual Water Conservation Conference. Through Aug. 15.

Columbus, N.M. -- School starts in the Deming School District, which is expected to lose students because of a provision of the new immigration laws that INS will begin enforcing this month.

Louisville, Ky. -- Kentucky State Fair opens for 11-day run.

FRIDAY, Aug. 15:

Algiers, Algeria -- A dozen U.S. businessmen arrive to consider investment possibilities in Algeria.

Gyoer, Hungary -- Premier Gyula Horn meets Premier Vladimir Meciar of neighboring Slovakia in talks expected to cover minority rights, a controversial dam on the Danube, and bilateral economic cooperation.

Little Rock, Ark. -- Deadline for President Clinton's response to Paula Jones' attempt to keep her sexual harassment suit alive in federal court.

New Orleans -- Louisiana covenant marriage law takes effect.

Los Angeles -- Status conference for Hollywood Madam Heidi Fleiss.

San Diego -- One-year anniversary of campus shooting at San Diego State.

Port Washington, Wis. -- Simplicity Manufacturing 75th Anniversary Parade to feature 800 tractors in attempt to set world record.

Lincoln, Neb. -- Sentencing for Julia Stubblefield, who pleaded no contest in the death of her weight-lifting boyfriend.

Odessa, Texas -- Retrial skedded to begin for Betty Culver, accused of shooting her track-star son in the back.

San Francisco -- Opening of three-day 4th annual Robot Wars, in which mechanical machines attempt to disable each other in gladiator competition.

SATURDAY, Aug. 16:

New Delhi, India -- State and federal legislators elect India's vice president.

San Diego -- Exhibit of Russia's lavish Romanov jewelry collection opens.
