Family Fishing Days: Catch and release tilapia at Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 2-3. Free admission. Bring bamboo poles with barbless hooks, bait, walking shoes, bug repellent, rain gear and a picnic. Parking is available at the Visitor Center, 45-680 Luluku Road in Kaneohe. Hawaii Nature Center: Explore 'Alewa/Kapalama with Dr. Chuck Burrows in this six-hour, moderate hike, Aug. 2.

"Beginning backpacking," 9 a.m.-noon Aug. 2. Participants will learn how to choose a trail, pack a backpack, read a map and the weather, then test their skills on a 2-1/2 mile hike around Makiki Valley. For ages 7 and up.

"Cold, Wet and Scaly" explores the world of reptiles with Aaron Miyamoto, 9:30-11:30 a.m. Aug. 3.

Hawaiian Tail and Mountain Club: Ulupaina hike, 9 a.m. Aug. 2. Four-mile, intermediate hike in Kahalu'u. Cost: $2. Information, 597-8493.

Fitness challenge: Marines of 1st Radio Battalion challenge individuals and teams in this six-discipline event, 8 a.m. Aug. 9, Marine Corps Base, Kaneohe Bay. Entry fee: $15 per person; or $25 per team, if registering by Aug. 4. A $5 late fee will be added after Aug. 4. Information, 254-7589.

"Learn-to-Live": Adult swimming classes, 5:15 to 6 p.m., Mondays, Wednesday and Thursdays through Aug. 21, Ala Moana Beach Park, Lifeguard Stand 1E. Free.

Free hike to Diamond Head: Meet the Clean Air Team at the Honolulu Zoo entrance, 9 a.m. Saturdays. Three miles to the top. Call 948-3299.

Waikiki Acrobatic Troupe meets 4 p.m. Sundays at the beach across Kapiolani Park Bandstand; free workout at UH Studio Four 8 p.m. Wednesdays. Call Don Heafner at 536-7205.

Ikebana classes: Lillian Koide teaches flower arrangement 9 a.m. to noon Wednesdays at the Japanese Cultural Center. Tuition $30 per month plus supplies. Call 537-5765, evenings.

Honolulu Zoo: Zoo opens at 8 a.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of the month. General admission $6; $2 with Yum Yum Tree senior card. First Wednesdays feature a botanical tour at 8:45 a.m. for $2 more. Third Wednesdays, tai chi practice begins 8 a.m. Call 971-7174.

Nature Conservancy hikes: Two guided hikes a month to Honouliuli Preserve, home to more than 45 rare native plants and animals. Donation. Call 537-4508.
