MONDAY: Commerce Department releases construction spending for June. 10 a.m.

THURSDAY: Labor Department releases unemployment claims. 8:30 a.m.; Freddie Mac releases weekly mortgage rates (time to be announced).; Federal Reserve releases consumer credit for June. 3 p.m.

SUNDAY, Aug. 3:

Timisoara, Romania -- King Michael due to arrive in this city, the heart of the 1989 Romanian anti-Communist revolt.

Singapore -- Hungry Ghost Festival. Through Sept. 1.

San Antonio -- 26th Annual Texas Folklife Festival.

Albany, N.Y. -- The state Senate and the state Assembly meet. Lawmakers expected to complete action on the long overdue $67 billion New York state budget.

MONDAY, Aug. 4:

Singapore -- Association of Southeast Asian Nations roundtable on "new millennium."

Washington -- Supreme Court in recess until October.

Washington -- Congress in recess until September.

Santa Monica, Calif. -- Pretrial hearing for Mikail Markhasev, the teen-ager accused of killing Ennis Cosby.

Everett, Wash. -- Aerospace Industries International Roundtable two-day conference.

El Paso, Texas -- Trial in suit filed by colonia developers against CBS, which aired expose on "60 Minutes".

Albany, N.Y. -- Some 300 young men and women of the "Pure Love Alliance" hold a march and rally around the state Capitol to demand abstinence-based sex education.

Warsaw, Mo. -- Burglary trial of Beverly Guehrer, who accompanied fugitive Alis Ben Johns for several months.

TUESDAY: Aug. 5:

New York -- Officials from the United States, China and the two Koreas meet to discuss procedural issues for the start of talks aimed at achieving a comprehensive settlement of the Korean conflict.

Kewaunee, Wis. -- Jury trial for former sheriff accused of sexual contact with a teen-age boy.

Kent, Wash. -- Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee holds official field hearings on Persian Gulf War Syndrome.

Cleveland -- Special election to determine whether Cleveland schools should be reimbursed for money lost through corporate tax abatements.

New York -- National Night Out Against Crime. New York celebration to include march and candlelight vigil in section of South Bronx where names of residents who have been victimized by crime and drugs will be read.

New York -- Release of butterflies begins Interfaith Peace Gathering commemorating the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki 52 years ago. (Hiroshima was bombed Aug. 6, 1945 and Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945, leading to end of World War II.)

San Quentin, Calif. -- Execution scheduled for Thomas Thompson, convicted of raping and killing woman in 1981.

Los Angeles -- A hearing is scheduled in suit filed by the producers of "Home Improvement" who claim Walt Disney is ready to accept a "sweetheart deal" from ABC for the series' renewal.

Pasadena, Calif. -- 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals scheduled to hear arguments on state's appeal of ruling overturning Charles Keating's state court thrift-fraud conviction.

Irvine, Calif. -- Judge expected to rule whether to unseal the Merrill Lynch-Orange County bankruptcy transcripts.

WEDNESDAY: Aug. 6:

Singapore -- Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum ponders its future.

Minneapolis -- Deadline for flood victims to apply for disaster assistance.

Potosi, Mo. -- Ralph Feltrop scheduled to be executed for 1987 slaying of his live-in girlfriend.

Santa Ana, Calif. -- Administrative hearing for Dr. W. Earle Matory Jr. and Dr. Robert Ken Hoo on temporary suspension of their licenses after patient death during liposuction. Through Aug. 9.

THURSDAY, Aug. 7:

Seattle -- Evidentiary hearing for Tony Ng, one of three people convicted in the 1983 Chinatown massacre.

Houston -- Scheduled start of 11-day shuttle Discovery mission.

Rye, N.H. -- Former Tennessee governor and presidential hopeful Lamar Alexander holds his first major public event of the 2000 campaign.

Kansas City, Mo. -- Vice President Al Gore is scheduled to address the Vietnam Veterans of America's national convention.

Martinez, Calif. -- Arraignment for woman charged with child abuse in the death of her 13-year-old daughter, who weighed 680 pounds

Hazard, Ky. -- Arraignment scheduled for Charles Wooton, charged with trying to have his mother killed on Mother's Day.

Columbia, S.C. -- Court-martial for Fort Jackson sergeant on sex-related charges.

Santa Ana, Calif. -- Pretrial hearing in Orange County vs. Merrill Lynch, $2 billion suit in which the county blames the country's largest brokerage for its municipal bankruptcy.

Santa Monica, Calif. -- Hearing on whether some items seized from O.J. Simpson as part of his wrongful death judgment were really his to begin with.

FRIDAY, Aug. 8:

Jakarta, Indonesia -- Meeting of world forestry experts. Through Aug. 12.

Merrill, Wis. -- Wal-Mart employees to vote on becoming the first in the country to unionize.

New York -- Sentencing hearing in case of Malcolm Shabazz, who admitted setting fire that killed his grandmother, Betty Shabazz.

Columbia, Mo. -- Start of U.S. National Hot Air Balloon Championships.

Los Angeles -- National Association of Police Organizations holds 19th annual convention at Biltmore Hotel, with Attorney General Janet Reno among the speakers.

SATURDAY, Aug. 9:

Singapore -- National Day holiday.

Texas -- Statewide constitutional amendment election on raising homestead property tax exemption.

Cincinnati -- Some 30,000 gospel music singers and fans meet for the 30th annual Gospel Music Workshop of America Inc. convention.

Akron, Ohio -- All-American Soap Box Derby.

SUNDAY, Aug. 10:

Christiansted, St. Croix -- 500 Rastas from around the world expected at third annual Rastafari Gathering, seven-day convention.
