Ho sharp as
Goldpanners rout Movers

Randon Ho and Darren Blakely, who play for the University of Hawaii during the collegiate season, played important roles in the 18-2 thrashing the Goldpanners of Fairbanks dealt the Hawaii Island Movers in an Alaska League baseball game at Rainbow Stadium yesterday.

Ho, a 5-foot-10 left-hander, allowed one hit over the first six innings and left the game with a 13-0 lead. He walked four and struck out five.

Blakely, the Goldpanners' center fielder, was 3-for-5 and drew a walk in his leadoff spot.

The teams split the four-game series.

The Movers conclude their season with a four-game series against the Anchorage Bucs starting with a 6 p.m. game Thursday at Rainbow Stadium.

TOP SEEDS TRIUMPH: Daniel Willman and Mark Willman, the No. 1 seeded team, defeated Hanley Ernst and Kevin Springer, 6-4, 6-4, last night as competition began in the main draw of the Kailua Men's Night Doubles tennis tournament at the Kailua Racquet Club.

Also winning their matches were partners Mark Kobayashi and Robert Lau, the No. 3 seeded pair of Howard Tacub and David Lam, and Lawrence Lowe and Jim Murray.

LEGION WINNERS: Windward and West Oahu advanced with victories in the American Legion State Baseball Tournament yesterday at Hans L'Orange Park.

Windward took an 8-3 lead after two innings and held on to beat Aiea, 11-9. West Oahu eliminated Hawaii Kai, 16-3.

Castle plays Aiea in an elimination game today at 4 at Hans L'Orange Park followed by a matchup between West Oahu and Windward.

GOODWAYTOSTART: At Hercules, Calif., Hauoli Kaaihue-Hughes pitched a two-hit shutout and fanned eight to lead Hawaii to a 5-0 victory over Marysville, Calif., in the first-round of the Little League Big League (16-18 years) Western Regional girls softball tournament yesterday.

Hawaii, seeded No. 2, was led by Stacy Makahilhila and Lyza Halas, each with two hits.

EXTRA-INNING VICTORY: At Salem, Ore., Jasmine McGuire's sacrifice fly scored Kelli Masuda with the winning run as Hawaii won its first-round game in the Little League Senior (13-15 years) Western Regional girls softball tournament yesterday, 9-8 in 10 innings over Pinole Hercules, Calif.

Masuda, on base on a fielder's choice, had advanced to third on a double by Naomi Wright, who had three hits and two RBIs.

WAHINE SIGN PITCHER: University of Hawaii women's softball coach Bob Coolen has announced the signing of Desiree Duran, a 5-foot-10 left-handed pitcher from San Gorgonio High School in San Bernardino, Calif.

Duran was 13-4 in her senior year and compiled a .465 batting average.

PRIZE MONEY OFFERED: The Kunitake Farms' Kona Marathon & Family Fun Runs will award prize money to the first three male and female finishers, $200, $100 and $75, respectively.

A $200 bonus will be given to the first person breaking the male or female course record and $1,000 to the first runner breaking two hours, twenty minutes.

The fourth annual event is Aug. 23, with the start and finish at the Keauhou Beach Hotel. For information, call (808) 325-0287.

UNDERWATER HOCKEY: The Underwater Hockey Pacific Coast Championship is set for Aug. 30-Sept. 1 at UH's Duke Kahanamoku Pool.

The international event features the top underwater hockey players from the Philippines, Great Britain, Canada and the U.S. mainland. The event is free and open to the public.

GILLETTE CHALLENGE SET: The Hyatt Regency Maui Kaanapali Classic has been designated as the site for the $20,000 Gillette Tour Challenge, Oct. 14 at the Royal Kaanapali North Course.

Five two-player teams will compete in a six-hole, alternate- shot competition. The Gillette Tour Challenge replaces the Merrill Lynch Shoot-Out, a featured event at many previous Senior PGA Tour tournaments.

The event will be held the Tuesday of the 54-hole Kaanapali Classic, which begins that Friday.
