CONTINUING
Air Force One
Russian dissidents hijack the plane of the U.S. president (Harrison Ford). Ford rises to the occasion and whips the bad guys. In the process "Air Force One" presents two hours of almost unbearable tension that is utterly fascinating to watch. (R) Aikahi, Kam Drive-In, Kapolei, Keolu, Koko Marina, Mililani, Nanakuli, Pearl Highlands, Restaurant Row, Waikiki 3
Contact
The adaptation of Carl Sagan's story about intelligence in other worlds challenges the mind and senses. Jodie Foster's intense belief in her work smooths over the few dubious patches. (PG) Kailua, Kapolei, Pearl Highlands, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row, Waikiki 2
Face/Off
A lack of dramatic structure and a sense of when to quit are set off by a provocative premise, virtuoso direction and dazzling performances from leads Nicolas Cage and John Travolta. The two square off and literally change roles partway through the movie, bringing lots of old-fashioned viewing pleasure. (R) Kahala, Kapolei, Pearlridge West
George of the Jungle
This airheaded comedy, a live-action version of the late 1960s animated television series, is so filled with slapstick humor, so willing to kid itself, that it adds up to the kind of silly summer fun that gives family entertainment a good name. (PG) Kahala, Kapolei, Keolu, Mililani, Pearl Highlands, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row
Good Burger
A clever yarn about small fries vs. big biz, this comedy serves up a heavy helping of fun and wholesome values. The title emporium is a modest fast-food joint peopled by teen misfits, which will imminently confront the might of the aptly named Mondo Burger looming up across the street. Stars Kel Mitchell and Kenan Thompson. (PG) Enchanted Lake, Kahala, Kapolei, Pearlridge, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row
Hercules
Disney's funniest, jazziest animation since "101 Dalmatians," "Hercules" is gorgeous filmmaking. It's also full of personality, with Tate Donovan as the hero, Susan Egan, Danny DeVito, and as Hades, James Woods, doing his quick-talking shyster bit better than ever before. (G) Matinees, Kahala, Kapolei, Pearlridge West
Men in Black
Funky, fitfully clever spoof on the UFO myth of secret government agents who keep track of extraterrestrial visitors. Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith team up to fend off a half-coherent interplanetary menace. Kid stuff, with a certain amount of style. (PG-13) Enchanted Lake, Kapolei, Koko Marina, Pearlridge, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row, Waikiki 1
My Best Friend's Wedding
This skewered variation on jealousy stars Julia Roberts who decides, after her best friend and former lover becomes engaged to someone else, that he is the man for her. Skillfully engaging, "Wedding" also has something to say about how we live, act, commit and relate. Co-stars Dermot Mulroney and Cameron Diaz. (PG-13) Kahala, Kapolei (evenings), Pearl Highlands, Restaurant Row
Nothing to Lose
This mildly entertaining movie tries too hard to be too many things: a smart interracial buddy movie, a moralistic family drama and a madcap road adventure. However, it lacks enough wild humor or exciting action to be much of anything. It's best asset is that stars Tim Robbins and Martin Lawrence work well together. (R) Cinerama, Kailua, Kapolei, Mililani, Pearl Highlands, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row
Operation Condor
Another silly Jackie Chan Hong Kong-made action flick with silly dubbing as well as story and acting. Chan has a flair for the acrobatic fights, and this movie is either completely awful or funny, depending on your mood. (PG-13) Kahala, Kapolei, Pearlridge West, Restaurant Row
The Pillow Book
English director Peter Greenaway weaves sex and text, flesh and literature into a gorgeous and evocative wedding of word and image. It follows the story of Nagiko (Vivan Wu), who served as the paper when her father painted calligraphy upon her as a birthday treat. She grows up to become the pen, illustrating the human body as a text. (Not rated) Varsity
Ulee's Gold
Peter Fonda makes an affecting screen comeback as Ulee Jackson, a taciturn figure who finds redemption late in life. Fonda captures keen, down-home intelligence and no-nonsense practicality in this hushed, unadorned study of the human spirit, ordinary lives and the dignity of hard work. (R) Kahala (evenings)
