








Chris Agena, a 1997 Punahou School graduate and a member of the varsity football team, has been selected the Hawaii recipient of the $1,000 Professional Athletes Foundation Student Scholarship. Agena receives $1,000
college scholarshipThe Professional Athletes Foundation is a scholarship program of the National Football League Retired Players Association.
The scholarship is designed for high school athletes who will attend a university, college or two-year institution that does not provide athletic scholarships.
Agena, a defensive back at Punahou, will be an incoming freshman at Loyola Marymount this fall.
SOUTHERN CAL TEAM LEADS: At Makena, Maui, the Southern California Golf Association took a four-stroke lead after the second round of the 31st Pacific Coast Amateur at Makena South Course.
With Jason Gore shooting a 71 and Craig Steinberg a par 72, Southern California combined for a 284 score. Gore, the California State Amateur champ who will be playing on the U.S. Walker Cup team, is the individual leader with a 36-hole score of 140.
Hawaii, represented by Phil Anamizu, Shane Hoshino and Paul Kimura, trails with a 310 total.
The 72-hole event, involving 19 teams representing 18 golf associations and including Mexico and Taiwan, ends tomorrow.
NO-HITTER FOR HUGHES: At Portland, Ore., Hauoli Hughes pitched a seven-inning no-hitter to lead Hawaii to a 3-0 victory over Alaska in the championship game of the Little League Girls Big League (16-18 years) Division I softball tournament yesterday.
Hughes struck out seven and walked no one.
Hawaii, 3-0 in the tourney, advances to the Western Regional at Hercules, Calif., Aug 3-9.
HAWAII REACHES FINAL: At Salem, Ore., Hawaii needs to defeat Washington twice today to win the Little League Big League (16-18 years) Division I baseball tournament.
Yesterday, Glenn Salcur was 4-for-4 and Paki Lum knocked in two runs as Hawaii defeated Oregon, 6-3. Ricky Roque Jr. was the winning pitcher.
AIEA ELIMINATED: At Boise, Idaho, Oregon needed 11 innings to squeak by Aiea, 6-5, in an elimination game at the Little League Seniors (14-15 years) Division I baseball tournament yesterday.
Mike Kim and Kyle Correa each had two hits for Aiea.
WEST BOISE PREVAILS: At Missoula, Mont., Aiea forced a second championship game, but fell short, losing to West Boise, Idaho, 9-8, in the Little League Juniors (13 years) Division I baseball tournament yesterday.
Earlier, Aiea, behind the pitching of Ross Akimoto and Justin Pate, had beaten West Boise, 6-3.
HPTA VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT: The Hawaii Pacific Tennis Association is seeking qualified persons to serve on the USTA/HPTA Board of Directors for the 1998-99 term.

STREND FITNESS CHALLENGE: The Marines of the 1st Radio Battalion are challenging individuals and teams to enter the STREND Fitness Challenge, Aug. 9, starting at 8 a.m. at the Marine Corps Base, Kaneohe Bay.
There are six disciplines in the event, five for upper body muscular STRength and the sixth, a cardiovascular ENDurance.
The fees are $12 for DoD card holders, $15 for civilians. Team fees are $20 and $25, respectively. A $5 late fee is charged after Aug. 4.

SKATE PARK OPENS: The YMCA Kapahulu Skatepark, a 20,000 square foot street course facility, has opened at the corner of Kapahulu and Harding avenues under the H-1 Freeway.
The park is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The annual membership is $30 plus a $2 daily user fee.
Non-members will be charged $10 per day. For Central YMCA members, the annual membership is $15 plus $2 daily user fee.
Safety gear -- knee pads, elbow pads and helmets -- and membership card are required to use the facility. Parking is available at Kaimuki High School.
