Natalie Cole has forged a career in two phases: rhythm and blues/urban contemporary, followed by jazz-based pop. Natalie Cole with the
Honolulu SymphonyCole, daughter of jazz and pop legend Nat "King" Cole, made her stage debut at 11. In 1973, she teamed up with Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancey, and the trio collaborated on a string of hits. The albums earned Cole five No. 1 R&B hits, including "This Will Be," "Inseparable," "Our Love" and "I've Got Love on My Mind."
Then came duets with Peabo Bryson and Ray Parker Jr. -- "Jump Start," "I Live for Your Love" and "Over You" in 1987, and "Pink Cadillac," a cover of a Bruce Springsteen tune, in 1989.
That's when she made a stylistic shift, easing into "When I Fall in Love," a song her father recorded in 1957, which she put on her 1987 album, "Everlasting."
The 1991 LP "Unforgettable with Love" was a No. 1 pop album, selling more than 5 million. The title track featured her in a duet with her father through "electronic elaboration."
