Judge Samuel King

Judge Sam King
hits 25-year mark

THIS new format may take some getting used to for both of us. But life is full of little changes and what follows, happily for some, sadly for others, will remain basically the same ... Nobody made a big deal out of it, but Federal Judge Sam King quietly observed his 25th anniversary on the Federal Bench, and his staff threw a little surprise luncheon party for him ... When the multi-hued and tattooed Dennis Rodman was vacationing in the islands, he created quite a stir. There were substantial screams heard when he strolled into Matteo's for dinner. One person who held her screaming in abeyance until after he left was assistant manager Winni Mattos, though she was thrilled that he autographed his wine bottle label for her to take home to her kids ...

SPIES in the local advertising community say keep your eye on Peck Sims Mueller. Word is that Don Mueller, who's been running things, has cleaned out his desk, and Sandy Sims, who's been spending his time on the Big Isle, has been a daily commuter to the office ... Sorry to report the death in Scottsdale, Ariz., of a prominent member of the local ad community, Dave Palmer, who'd moved to the desert in retirement. He was very active with the Press Club locally and appeared in numerous episodes of "Hawaii Five-O," often as a judge ...

SPEAKING of advertising, I think some of the best you'll see on the tube are from AT&T. Complementing the humorous batch featuring Paul Reiser of "Mad About You," were some heart-tugging spots that revolve around hit songs, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," "I Go Out Walkin' After Midnight" and "Rocket Man," for example. Now local AT&T V.P. Ken Sandefur reveals that the company used Aloha Stadium in their latest international TV spot. It's meant to be a Japanese baseball stadium, but the cost to film it here was much less than in Japan. And as Sandefur points out, it was easy to find appropriate "extras" to fill the bleachers ...

Buck stops here

BEING basically a good guy, UH assistant coach Buck Dillon and his wife volunteered to take home a friend of a friend who was attending the same function and who'd had too much to drink. The passenger climbed in the back seat with a doggie bag. Mrs. Dillon asked, "Do you have a dog?" The man answered, "No, I'm self-employed." End of conversation ...

YOU tend to think of the country as a quiet, laid-back place, but it's not always so at the Turtle Bay Hilton. In quick order, G.M. John Elford helped coordinate the second annual "Mid-Summer's Wine Dream" with proceeds benefiting the North Shore Surf & Cultural Museum. Then Miss Universe, Brook Lee, was in for three hectic days in one of the "Junior Suites." And now that the "George of the Jungle" crew are basking in the glow of a financial success, the film crew of "Godzilla," starring Matthew Broderick, are moving in with high hopes for similar box office numbers ...

What's for dessert?

IT took three tries, but Mid-Pac grad Kenrick Ebisu was the first to down the Dixie Grill's "Bust Yo' Belly" burger, a two-pound cheeseburger with a pound of fries and cole slaw which must be consumed on site in less than 30-minutes. Some 47 people had officially entered the challenge, and Ebisu, who stands 6-feet and weighs in at 265 - uh, make that 268 - was the first to win the $25 meal free. He works for an exterminating company, and if he can make termites disappear like he did that burger, he'll go far ...
