Hula Bowl will feature
special teams award

The Hula Bowl college all-star football game not only moves to a new home on Maui this year. The game also becomes the home to a new award -- a special award.

After the regular season, the nation's top special teams player will win a trophy and be invited to play in the 1998 Hula Bowl.

The winner of the award could be any Division I-A special teams player - including kickers, punters, returners, blockers and coverage players. Three finalists and a winner will be chosen by a selection committee of coaches, media and community leaders.

"The selection committee will heavily consider all aspects of special teams play," said Lenny Klompus, Bowl Games of Hawaii chief executive officer. "This is the one area that is without an award in college football. This award will bridge that gap."

The winner will be announced in Hawaii on Dec. 8 and as part of the ESPN college football awards show on Dec. 11. Also, The American Football Coaches Association is considering adding a special teams player to its All-American team.

Bowl Games of Hawaii, the AFCA, and the Honolulu and Maui Quarterback Clubs are working together on the award, which also includes a scholarship for a Hawaii athlete.

"This will be a great boost for college football at the national and state level," said Honolulu Quarterback Club president Earl Galdeira. "It's an honor for the club to be involved and a great tribute to the state."
