Matsushige in
first-round lead

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Keola Matsushige of Honolulu took the first-round lead in the boys' handicap division of the Coca-Cola Youth Bowling Championships yesterday with a four-game series of 984.

Hawaii's Kahealani Kaawa was second in the girls' division with a 949, 26 pins behind the leader.

In the boys' scratch division, Hawaii's Scott Nakano was in 29th place with an 807 total. Laura Matsushima was in 38th place in the girls' scratch division with a 724.

FUJITA OUSTED: At Lexington, Ky., Del-Marc Fujita of Honolulu was eliminated from the U.S. Amateur Public Links Golf Championship in yesterday's second round by Chris Bedore of Richmond, Ky., 3 and 1.

Trip Kuehne, the runner-up to Tiger Woods in the 1994 U.S. Amateur, advanced to the quarterfinal round at the par 72 Kearney Hill Golf Links.

SELECT TEAM DEFEATED: At Las Vegas, Levon Freeman scored 21 points but it was not enough as Hawaii Select fell to Massachusetts Select, 62-53, last night in the Adidas Big Time boys' basketball tournament.

Hawaii (0-3) plays Colorado Select today in the consolation bracket semifinals of the open division. Also in double figures for Hawaii were Brandon Brooks and Kaimana Freitas, both with 10 points.

TRAMPOLINE, TUMBLING EXHIBITION: The U.S. Trampoline and Tumbling elite exhibition squad will put on two shows at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center Tuesday.

The exhibitions are scheduled for 1 and 6 p.m. and will last 30 minutes.

ROOSEVELT ATHLETIC MEETING: A mandatory Fall Seasonal Meeting for parents and athletes at Roosevelt High School will be held Aug. 7 in the auditorium.

If parents cannot attend the meeting, they need to make arrangements with the Roosevelt athletic department so their son or daughter can participate in athletics.

LEAHI TEAM SELECTED: Leahi Soccer Club, the oldest and largest girls' soccer club in Hawaii, is sending its under-11 team to one of the premier youth tournaments in the nation, the San Diego Surf Cup, July 25-27.

The Leahi team was one of 16 selected from a pool of 74 applicants.

GOLF CHANNEL ON: The Golf Channel (TGC), the world's first television network devoted exclusively to golf programming, is now available to Oceanic Cable subscribers.

Coverage includes the U.S. and international tours as well as golf tip programs and talk shows. For information, call Oceanic at 625-8100

DAMIEN BENEFIT GOLF: The Drive Fore Damien golf tournament is Aug. 4 beginning with an 8 a.m. shotgun start at the Honolulu Country Club.

The fee is $100 for the two-man scramble event. Proceeds go to the Damien Memorial High School scholarship fund.
