Keali'i Reichel, Scotty Pippin
T HIS isn't the place where you usually read wedding news, particularly about one taking place in Chicago. But my spies there tell me there hasn't been a word in the paper yet, so this may well be a world scoop: Chicago Bulls star Scottie Pippen is getting married this weekend to an Assyrian woman, Larsa Younan. It's strictly a hush-hush affair, and keeping anything about the Bulls secret in Chicago is a near impossibility, especially when His Airness himself, Michael Jordan, is going to be the best man and his wife the maid of honor. The word has come down from the organizers -- no cameras allowed, but lots of luck keeping the paparazzi from showing up for this one. And just think, if the Pippens move quickly and have a baby in nine months, he or she will be a Taurus, born under the Sign of the Bull . . . Pippen to wed,
and thats no bullTODAY is the 22nd birthday of Tepairu McMoore, former Miss Samoa runner-up, who's one of the leads in "Fine Dancing," to be staged next month on Magic Island Lagoon. Vilsoni Hereniko, who's directing the show (and who, incidentally, is engaged to former Hawaii International Film Festival honcho Jeannette Paulson), says "Tepa" would be a natural to play Princess Kaiulani should anyone make a movie about her. He claims she's a dead ringer for the Princess . . .
THE Star-Bulletin's Rod Ohira is one of those '60s kids who was stoked by the oldies concert at the Arena Saturday night. Ohira, who took in many of the old "Show of Stars" shows and "Million-Dollar Parties" in decades past, called it, "The best concert I've ever seen, and that includes the Eagles." He also said it was the fastest three hours he ever spent. His reaction seems to be typical of people I've talked to who saw the show -- I missed it! -- and that has prompted promoter Tom Moffatt to plan another such concert on Aug. 22. He's already talked to the Drifters about returning. Another surprise hit at the weekend musicfest were the Tokens of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" fame . . .
ONCE you've lived in the islands of Hawaii, the isle of Manhattan can seem like a cold and foreboding place. Just ask Becky Holm, daughter of Barbara Holm of the Hawaii Foodservice News (or as her pals call it, the "Flooze-service News"). Becky now lives in Minnesota, but is in New York for a month on assignment from her employer, Merrill Printing, and says she survives her daily subway rides by listening to the Brothers Cazimero and Cecilio & Kapono on her headset. She's found a dearth of aloha spirit in the Big Apple, though there was much of it flowing at Keali'i Reichel's Carnegie Hall concert last weekend. Laura Bach, formerly on the staff of Manoa Valley Theatre and now looking for theater work in Manhattan, was on hand for the concert. Her capsule review: "Talk about beautiful!" But aside from the show itself, Bach sighed, "It was lovely to smell pikake again." . . . Islands: Oahu vs. Manhattan
MAHALO to Executive Centre for sending an invite to the fifth anniversary celebration of the hotel on July 30, but the next person to send me an envelope that contains little stars and confetti that end up all over my carpet, is hereby invited to come over and sweep it up . . .
THAT movie filming on Kauai with Harrison Ford and Ann Heche is called "6 Days, 7 Nights," but if they're using hotel and resort lingo, it should be reversed. Every package deal I've seen would read, "7 Days, 6 Nights." . . .
LOVERS of dance have a potentially great evening ahead. On July 25, the Pier Bar of Aloha Tower Marketplace will feature a "dance jam." Like a musical jam among musicians, this event will bring together Hawaii's hottest contemporary dance companies. Among those jamming: 24VII Danceforce, UH Rainbow Dancers, Contemporary Danceforms, SLAM!, Drill Team Hawaii, Honolulu Dance Company and KPAC Unlimited. Special guests will be SKIP Entertainment Company, an L.A.-style dance group from Guam passing through en route to Germany to perform at the World Dance Congress . . . Dance your pants off
