Honolulu Zoo by Moonlight: See what animals do at night, 6:30-8:30 p.m. July 17-18 and 20-21. Cost: $5 children; $7 adults. Tickets available in advance at the zoo's box office. Information, 971-7176.

Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club: Five-mile, intermediate hike to Wa'ahila-Kolowalu, 9 a.m. July 19; and 12-mile Aiea Ridge, advanced hike, July 20. Meet at 8 a.m., Iolani Palace, mountain side for both hikes. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Bring lunch and water, and wear good shoes and appropriate clothing. Cost: $2. "Just Japan" slide show by Joyce Tomlinson, 7:30 p.m. July 19, clubhouse. Bring sushi or senbei or pay $1 at-the-door.

Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden: Explore the garden at night, 6:30-9 p.m. July 18-19. Bring walking shoes, bug repellent, rain gear and a flashlight. Garden gate opens at 5:30 p.m. for those who want to picnic. Free. Reservations: 233-7323.

"Skate Fitness and Workout Program," 5:30-7:30 p.m. July 17 and 24, University of Hawaii. Call 956-6468.

Students must be 16-years-old or older for UH classes and 6-years-old or older for the YWCA class. Skates and protective gear provided. Fee.

Full moon hikes: National Sierra Club member recruitment will be held during a hike at Makapu'u, July 19. Cost: $1-$3. Call 538-6616.

Also, annual Koko Crater Botanical Garden moonlight walk, July 19. Potluck dinner begins at 6 p.m., walk to follow. Bring a flashlight. Information, 522-7063.

Restoration project: Herb Lee Jr. leads the restoration of an ancient Hawaiian fish pond, July 19, Waikalualoko Fish Pond, Kaneohe. Carpool, 8:30 a.m., Punchbowl side of the State Library on King Street; or meet at the pond at 9 a.m. Be prepared to get wet. Wear fishing tabis. Donation: $2 per person. Reservations, 247-0104.

"Skatin' Safari": Second Annual In-line Skating Event, 4-7 p.m. July 19, Aug. 23 and Sept. 27, Honolulu Zoo. Skating instruction, 5-6 p.m. Participants must wear full safety gear and children under 12 must be accompanied by a "skating" adult. Limited supply of skates and safety gear available for rental with a picture ID. Pre-registration: $5, one day; $8 two days; and $10, three days. Same-day registration: $10. Information, 948-6848.

Hawaii Nature Center: Three-mile Kahala to Natatorium Beach walk with Annette Hee, July 20. Cost: $7. Reservations required. Call 955-0100.

Weekend fishing: Nuuanu Reservoir Number 4 open for weekend fishing by anglers with a valid State of Hawaii Freshwater Game Fishing License and Entry Fishing Card beginning Aug. 16.
