Benjamin A. Acoba, 71, of Kapaau, Hawaii died Monday in Kohala Hospital. Born in Ilocos Norte, Bacara, the Philippines, he is survived by wife Dorotea; son Benjamin; daughters Norma Keliikipi and Patricia Morin; brother Raphael; sisters Feliza and Magdelina Yanos and Apolonia Llanillo; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. James H. Balai, 69, of Waipahu, a retired U.S. Army master sergeant, died Friday in Hospice Hawaii Kailua Home. Born in Ewa, he is survived by brothers Honlio Balai and Domingo Nabal; sisters Gavina Dela Cruz and Carol Mamaril; daughter Rosaline L.H. Gaudet; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Wilhelmina M. Hills, 88, of Honolulu, a retired housekeeper and cook at Blessed Sacrament Church, died July 9 in Honolulu. Born in Waialua, she is survived by daughter Betty Yuen; care-givers John J. Shige Isokane, 100, of Honolulu, a board member of Nichiren Mission of Hawaii, died Saturday at home. Born in Kochi Ken, Japan, she is survived by sons Sam S., Robert K. and Harry M.; daughters Sumiko Isokane, Mary S. Ricketson, Alice T. Ikeda and Gladys C. Isokane; and six grandchildren. Albert R.M.T. Kahawai Jr., 53, of Waianae, founder of Na Koeha Volleyball Club and a hula dancer, died last Thursday in St. Francis-West Hospital. Merl W. “Kojac” Mattern, 68, of Honolulu died Sunday in Tripler Hospital. Born in Michigan, he is survived by wife Julia A. “Julie”; sons James W. and Frederick T.; daughter Linda J. Patricia A. McDowell, 71, of Glendale, Ariz. and formerly of Honolulu, died Friday at home. She was an employee of Pacific Laundry. Herbert Rawlins, 77, of Honolulu, a retired machinist with Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, Shop 38, died Sunday in Honolulu. Born in Honolulu, he is survived by son Douglas Silva; daughters Audrey Wagner, Maileann Guidroz and Nadine M. Taniguchi; brothers Daniel and Robert; sisters Thelma Kaalau, Angeline Enos, June Azevedo, Dorothy Kaulukukui and Carol Lee Rawlins; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Guildford W. Rodenhurst Jr., 55, of Redondo Beach, Calif., a decorated retiree of U.S. Marine Corps who was born in Honolulu, died Thursday in Palos Verdes, Calif. He was also employed with U.S. Coast Guard. He is survived by wife, children, grandchildren, grandchildren, parents and siblings. Burial: 11 a.m. Friday in Oahu Cemetery. Aloha attire.
