Akebono continues
to chase Takanohana

NAGOYA, Japan -- Takanohana kept the lead at 10-1 and fellow yokozuna (grand champion) Akebono stayed one victory behind today in the 15-day Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament.

Takanohana, seeking his 17th tournament title, grabbed Ganyu's belt and forced him out.

Akebono, or Chad Rowan from Hawaii, who won his ninth title in the last tournament in May, charged Higonoumi with hand thrusts, grabbed his belt and sent him out.

Two victories behind Takanohana at 8-3 were ozeki (champion) Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani from Hawaii, and Takatoriki.

Musashimaru drove out Wakanohana today after a midring pushing duel.

Konishiki, or Salevaa Atisanoe from Hawaii, was sent out by Asanowaka and fell to 5-6.

Yamato, or George Kalima from Hawaii, drove out Mainoumi for his third victory against eight defeats.
