Let your computer
do the sailing

Calling out "Ala Wai or bust," the 1997 TransPac sailors are roaring our way from Los Angeles.

The first boats crossed the finish line yesterday.

The whole race is neatly summarized at the official race site at http://kenwoodcorp.com/transpac97/, thanks to the sponsor, Kenwood Corp.

Fueled by the remnants of Hurricane Delores, some of the boats are averaging 13.5 knots.

As the slick racers pull into Waikiki, you may also want to tie up to the Waikiki Yacht Club site at http://holoholo.org/wycnews/transpac/.

If you don't want to sail over to one of the gift shops with Transpac memorabilia, you can get the speediest trinket of all: Merlin, the record-holder.

"More people have gone fast on Merlin than any other boat," says the description of the boat.

You can gawk at http://fastisfun.com/merlin2.html or just buy it for $239,000.
