Mandel playing the blues

Blues guitarist Harvey Mandel, who has performed with musical greats ranging from Howlin' Wolf to Albert King, performs in Hawaii this month.

Known as the "King of Sustain," Mandel has been recording solo albums since 1968. He performed with Canned Heat at Woodstock, with the Rolling Stones on "Black and Blue" and with various editions of the John Mayall Band.

Catch Seafood Festival

Head down to the Hawaii Seafood Festival's People's Choice Contest Sunday at Aloha Tower Marketplace, cast your vote for the best dish, and you could reel in a prize.

Chefs from participating Marketplace restaurants will prepare a dish using Hebi, a short-billed spearfish. Samples of the dishes will be available at the restaurant entrances from 4 to 5 p.m. Prizes will be given to the first 100 people submitting complete ballots in the ballot box at the Marketplace Atrium.

As part of the event, Nelson Aberilla will demonstrate how to select and filet fish from 4 to 4:30 p.m. For more information, call 528-5700.

A final salute to Bruddah Iz

"Remembering Iz," a 30-minute program honoring the late Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, airs 6:30 p.m. July 9 on KGMB/CBS. The program will include live news footage from the state Capitol rotunda prior to the musician's funeral service, as well as video clips of his life and music.

Halau celebrates

Halau Mohala 'Ilima presents the 18th annual Hoolauna Pu Kakou 3 to 6 p.m. July 13 at King Intermediate School in Kaneohe, 46-155 Kamehameha Highway.

Kawai Cockett, Anakala David Ka'io and Anuhea will entertain; Halau Mohala 'Ilima's various classes will perform. Dancers will be presented with 5-, 10- and 15-year awards commemorating their years with the halau.

Coolers under 18 inches and legless chairs are allowed. Admission is $5; keiki 10 years and under are free.

Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Makalei Foundation which supports cultural and educational activities of the halau.

Do it with Art & Soul

Temari 18: Art & Soul, a fund-raiser for Temari, Center for Asian and Pacific Arts, will be held 5 to 8 p.m. July 17 at McCoy Pavilion in Ala Moana Park.

Highlighting the event is the Art Marketplace showcasing the work of 18 Hawaii artists, a silent auction of arts and crafts, entertainment and heavy pupus.

Lot to fill two days

The Prince Lot Hula Festival for the first time in its 20-year history will be held over two days - July 19 and 20 - at Moanalua Gardens' Chinese Hall. The event is dedicated to hula performed by dancers of halau and kumu hula long associated with the festival.

Robert Cazimero will lead other kumu hula with the sounds of 20 drums in Saturday's opening ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Also performing on Saturday is Melveen Leed Vairaaroa. Sunday's program begins at 9 a.m.

There is no admission fee, although donations will be accepted.

Molokai sampler

"Molokai Comes to the Ward Warehouse" celebrates the Friendly Island's music, dance, crafts, food and culture 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 26 at Ward Warehouse Amphitheatre. Presented by the Molokai Visitor's Association, the event includes hula and a "Molokai Jam" by Molokai musicians at noon and 3 p.m.

Fresh-baked Molokai bread will be flown in for sale and Molokai Ranch safari guide Pilipo Solatorio will present a slide show on the Molokai Ranch Wildlife Conservation Park.

Harvey Mandel tours isles

Guitar virtuoso Harvey Mandel and his Electric Snake Band come to Hawaii for four performances on three islands beginning 8 p.m. July 24 at The World Cafe in Lahaina, Maui.

Mandel, who has performed with Canned Heat, John Mayall, Charlie Musselwhite and the Rolling Stones, also performs 9 p.m. July 25 at Waikiki's Hawaiian Hut; 8:30 p.m. July 26 at Gecko Moon, Kawaihae, Big Island, and on July 27 at the Moku Ola Room of the Hilo Hawaiian hotel. All tickets are $16.50 in advance; $19 at the door.

On Maui, tickets are available at The World Cafe, Sir Wilfreds, Lahaina Cannery Mall, Anthony's Coffee, Stella Blues Cafe and Maui Coffee Roasters. On Oahu, tickets are at Tower Video, Tower Records, Paradise City Music, Rainbow Books and Hungry Ear stores. Hemp-orama

The 1997 Hawai'i Hempfest occurs 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. July 19 at Waimanalo Polo Fields, and features music groups Red Session, Chilum, Dread Ashanti, THC, Marty Dread, Homegrown and Ocean 11.

There will also be craft and food booths, a skating ramp and volleyball. Scattered throughout the event will be informational displays about the industrial potential of hemp.
