SATURDAY

Legends: Jeff Gere and HearSay enact several tales including the Mexican legend of Macario and the Native American Legend of Siyotanka. At 7:30 p.m., UH-Manoa, Orvis Auditorium. Adult program to follow. Cost: $3-$6. Call 956-7866.

"Grinds For the Mind": 1997 young adult state-wide summer reading program for teens entering grades 7-12. Teens can receive weekly incentives for books read through July 26. Register at a public library. Statewide end of program prizes include Pearlridge Shopping Spree drawings of $1,000, $500 and $250. Neighbor island winners will be flown in.

"Read ... Let Your Mind Soar!": 1997 children's statewide summer reading program for children who will be in preschool through sixth grade in the fall. Weekly incentives and special programs. Register at a public library. Through July. Information at 586-3620.

Honolulu Zoo programs: Tours by day and by moonlight, art classes and camp-outs through August, including children's and parents-toddlers programs. Call the Education Office at 971-7188.

"Ocean Planet": What intriguing things are hiding in our oceans? Bishop Museum will unlock the ocean's secrets in an exhibit through Oct. 5. Admission: $6.95-$14.95. Call 847-3511.

Preschool storytime: Children ages 3-5 can listen to stories, 10:30-11 a.m. Thursdays at Kaimuki Public Library. Call 733-8422.

Tropical plant nature walk: 10 a.m. Saturdays and 1 p.m. Sundays at Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden. Free. Bring walking shoes, insect repellent and rain gear. Call 233-7323 for reservations.

Train rides: Enjoy a 90-minute ride through Ewa 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. Sundays with Hawaiian Railway Society, 91-1001 Renton Road. Costs $8 general, $5 seniors and children. Reservations: 681-5461.
