Yokozuna lead the way

NAGOYA, Japan -- Yokozunas (grand champions) Akebono and Takanohana both improved to 2-0, but ozeki (champion) Wakanohana suffered an upset today in the 15-day Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament.

Akebono, or Chad Rowan from Hawaii, drove komusubi (junior champion second class) Tochiazuma (1-1) to the ring's edge and crushed him down.

Takanohana grabbed No. 1 maegashira (senior wrestler) Musoyama's belt and drove him out. Musoyama is 0-2.

Ozeki Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani from Hawaii, also went to 2-0 when he overcame komusubi (junior champion) Oginishiki's sidestepping and arm throw attempts and forced him out. Oginishiki is 0-2.

No. 2 maegashira Aogiyama (2-0) sent out ozeki Wakano-hana with hand thrusts. Wakanohana, who missed the last tournament in May with a leg injury, is 1-1.

Ozeki Takanonami lifted out No. 2 maegashira Kotoinazuma (0-2) for his first victory against one defeat.

No. 9 maegashira Konishiki, or Salevaa Atisanoe from Hawaii, bulldozed No. 12 maegashira Rikio to the ring's edge, but Rikio twisted around and threw him down, leaving both at 1-1.

No. 11 maegashira Kyoku-shuzan, or Mongolian Batbayar Davaa, was sent out by No. 9 maegashira Mainoumi (1-1) for his second defeat against no victories.

No. 15 maegashira Yamato, or George Kalima from Hawaii, was thrust down by No. 13 maegashira Terao, leaving both at 1-1.

In the 26-member juryo division, just below the makuuchi class, No. 4-ranked Kyokutenho, or Mongolian Tsevegnyam Nyamjav, forced out No. 1-ranked Kushimaumi.

In makushita, the top junior division, No. 2-ranked Hoshitango, or Argentine Imach Marcelo Salomon, pushed out equally ranked Mutetsuyama for his first victory against no defeats.

No. 37-ranked Kyokutenzan, or Mongolian Enkhbat Batmunkha, suffered his first defeat against no victories as he was sent out by No. 37-ranked Daishinki.

Wrestlers in junior divisions have only seven bouts during the 15-day tournament.
