Winds claim
Transpac yacht

Winds of 20 knots dismasted the turbo sled Magnitude, which withdrew from the Transpacific Yacht Race yesterday.

Magnitude started from San Pedro, Calif., Saturday with the fastest monohulls in light winds, but overnight the winds picked up to 20 knots, leading to the disappointing mishap for Doug Baker's new boat out of Long Beach.

But those strong winds, and oncoming tropical storm Dolores, with gusts to 65 knots, could mean a very fast race, perhaps one that will rival Merlin's record crossing of 8 days, 11 hours, 45.01 minutes set in 1977.

Medicine Man, which started July 2, covered 305 miles to close to within 399 miles of leader Salsipuedes, which started June 28 and was 842 miles from the Diamond Head finish line.

MOVERS LOSE: Bobby Waters and Bill Mott homered as the Anchorage Bucs beat the Hawaii Island Movers, 7-2, in an Alaska League game in Anchorage yesterday.

Kyle Higuchi and Neil Honma each had two hits for the Movers, who split the four-game series with the Bucs.

ADLER,CHOCKWIN: Stephen Adler, a former Mid-Pacific Institute swimmer who now competes for Northern Arizona University, won the North Shore Challenge yesterday.

Adler, 19, covered the 2.5-mile course in 49 minutes, 8 seconds.

Pia Chock, a 17-year-old PunahouSchool graduate, was second overall and won the women's title in 50:38.
