Charged up
over solar energy

By Ken Sakamoto, Star-Bulletin
Harold Kogasaka, left, an electronics teacher at Kaimuki
High School, and Art Seki, renewable energy specialist at
Hawaiian Electric Co., unload one of eight photovoltaic
panels at the school yesterday. The panels were installed
on top of the gymnasium to kick-off the Heco's "Sun Power
for Schools" program. The company has committed $100,000
over the next two years for the program. The Big Island and
Maui electric companies each will contribute $20,000. The
new system will provide some of the schools' power needs
and also be used by teachers for classroom instruction.
Baldwin High School has been selected as the second school
to receive the panels which use silicon cells to produce
electricity. Other high schools chosen for the pilot program
through 1998 are McKinley, Waianae and Waipahu.
