Beef beats chicken
for grilling

Good old-fashioned steaks and burgers are back on the top of the list of the most frequently barbecued foods in America.

Steak has bumped chicken off the top spot for the first time in four years, says the Weber GrillWatch Survey. The Top 5 favorite foods to grill are:

Steaks, 97.8 percent.

Hamburgers, 97.4 percent.

Sausages/hot dogs, 93 percent.

Chicken Pieces, 92.1 percent

Ribs, 81.5 percent.

The survey also notes that for the first time, more Americans own gas than charcoal grills. Fifty-eight percent reported owning a gas grill; 39 percent said they owned a charcoal grill. Nearly 10 percent said they owned and used both.

For your Fourth of July grilling, local markets are offering a host of specials on those juicy red meats.

Sack N Save has beef short ribs, country-style pork ribs and loin pork ribs, all for $1.97 a pound with Maika'i card ($2.69 without). At Safeway, the steak selection is beef chuck, $1.39 a pound; cross rib, $1.99; rib eye, $3.99.

Star also has bone-in rib eyes for $3.99 and pork spare ribs for $1.99.

At Daiei, country-style ribs are $1.78; beef short ribs are $2.58.

And Foodland has chuck steaks or roasts for $1.89; cross rib for $2.29. Spare Ribs are $1.88 with Maika'i card ($2.59 without).
