Bartels paces Hawaii
prep surfing champions

Melanie Bartels won two titles to lead a strong Hawaii contingent at the National Scholastic Surfing Association championship meet held June 23-28 at San Clemente, Calif.

Bartels took first place in both the Explorer Women's division and in Women's Body Board.

Other national champions from Hawaii included: Bruce Irons (Open Men), Kekoa Bacalso (Open Boys), Hank Gaskell (Groms), Tyson Okazaki (Men's Body Board), and Paul Cooper (Drop Knee Body Board).

The Hawaii group also had nine second-place finishers:Mikala Jones (Open Men), Dustin Cuizon (Open Boys), Edwin Nakazato (Open Body Board), Bartels (Open Women), Thomas Dosland (Explorer Menehunes), David Townly (Explorer Masters), Ikaika Villa (Junior Body Board), Jason Bartels (Drop Knee Body Board) and Rachael Block (Women's Body Board).

SALSIPUEDES LEADS:Salsipuedes held a 27-mile lead yesterday over Endeavor II in the cruising division of the 39th Transpacific yacht race to Honolulu.

Salsipuedes, a 52-footer sailed by Fred Frye of San Diego, reported it had sailed 191 miles in the previous 24 hours, giving it a large lead over the 40-foot Endeavor II, sailed by Eleanor Clitheroe.

Three other cruisers trailed and two more dropped out less than a day after they started the 2,225-nautical mile race Saturday.

Frye, a retired pediatrician, was averaging 6.9 knots after the first day's heavy winds and seas subsided to 15 knots and seas of 2-4 feet.

The regular racing classes will start off the Palos Verdes Peninsula tomorrow, Saturday and Monday.

HANSEN'S HOT: Lars Hansen drove in five runs with two hits, including a double, as the Hawaii Island Movers beat Meiji University, 15-10, Saturday at Tokyo, in Pacific Region Baseball action.

The Movers played to a 7-7 tie yesterday against Keio University, with Hansen again stroking two hits and driving in two runs.
