UH’s Klaneski gets
preseason notice

Football News has named University of Hawaii defensive back Eddie Klaneski to its preseason All-Western Athletic Conference team.

Klaneski, a 5-foot-10, 176-pound senior from Waipahu and a Damien High School graduate, is the only Rainbow selected.

Last year, his first as a defensive back, Klaneski led UH in tackles with 114 (79 unassisted, 35 assisted) and had two tackles for a loss. He also returned 18 punts for 165 yards, nine kickoffs for 263 yards and had five pass interceptions, one for a 67-yard touchdown.

He was the Rainbows' only all-WAC selection following the 1996 season.

Also named to the all-WAC preseason team was fullback Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala, a St. Louis School graduate who plays for the University of Utah.

TSUNAMI SCHEDULE CHANGE: The Hawaii Tsunami has rescheduled its matches against the Southern California Chivas tonight and tomorrow at Cooke Field to July 25 and 27.

They also will be played at Cooke Field at 8 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.

SKATEBOARDING RESCHEDULED: The Association of Skateboarders in Hawaii will hold its second contest of the year tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Aala Park. The event was postponed last week due to bad weather.

AYSO SOCCER TOURNAMENT: The 17th annual AYSO Rainbow Soccer Tournament has more than 110 teams competing in all divisions at Kapiolani Park Wednesday through next Sunday's finals.

The opening ceremony is Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Kapiolani Park Bandstand.

More than 1,500 mainland and local boys and girls, ages 8-18, will be participating.

BENEFIT GOLF TOURNAMENT: The third annual Royal Garden Cup Charity golf tournament will be held July 14 at the Honolulu International Country Club.

Proceeds will benefit the National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii, the Waikiki Improvement Association and the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program.

The format is three-person, best-ball with registration starting at 11 a.m. The cost is $150 per person, $450 per three-person team. There is a limit of 144 participants.

JACKPOT FISHING TOURNAMENT: The BayFest '97 Jackpot Fishing Tournament is set for July 19 in Kaneohe Bay.

The early registration fee is $200 per boat for entries received by July 1, $230 thereafter.

This fun, jungle-rules tournament is based on a jackpot format where the first-place winner will receive up to $5,000 in cash for the largest marlin, ahi, mahimahi or ono caught.

PUBLIC TELEVISION BENEFIT: The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs and the Housing Finance and Development Corporation are sponsoring the HPTV Classic, a golf tournament that benefits Hawaii Public Television.

The event will be held Aug. 15 at the Kapolei Course. The entry fee is $100 per player for each three-person team and includes the awards banquet.
