State has thorny problem
at park and not sure why

We had a picnic on Memorial Day at Kakaako Waterfront Park and found the park in terrible shape. There are thorns or, in local language, "kukus," all over. You can't walk 2 feet without stepping or sitting on a bunch of thorns. It's not fun when you have to constantly remove thorns from your crying kids hands or feet. The bathrooms need servicing badly. They were out of toilet paper at noon and you had to hold your breath because they looked and smelled like they hadn't been cleaned for awhile. What is happening there? It used to be a beautiful place to have a picnic.

Nothing should have changed in terms of maintenance, said Alex Achimore, director of planning and development for the Hawaii Community Development Authority, which administers the state park. "It's always been maintained by the state parks department," he said.

Achimore also said he hadn't heard any complaints about the restrooms there, even though funding "has been tight." But he promised to look into the matter.

The "kukus," however, are literally a thorny problem.

"We have been getting complaints about the thorns and are concerned about that," Achimore said. "We are getting the original design consultant to look at the problem and to see why this is happening and what can be done to correct it."

In January, I renewed my drivers license. I am 65. I was given a two-year license. According to an article in the June 12 Star-Bulletin, people between the ages of 18 and 71 are given four-year licenses. Can you clarify?

That information was wrong. Drivers aged 25 to 64 now receive four-year licenses, while all other drivers receive two-year licenses, said David Mau, the city's assistant motor vehicle and licensing administrator.

The proposed new law, which will take effect before July 9 because it was not vetoed by the governor by the June 23 deadline, authorizes six-year licenses for thos aged 18 to 71, four-year licenses to those 15-17, and two-year licenses for those 72 and over.
