Newell’s Big Man Camp
returns in August

The Pete Newell Big Man Camp will return to the University of Hawaii's Special Events Arena, with 25 NBA players and a camp for college and international stars, Aug. 18 through 23.

Shaquille O'Neal, Shawn Kemp, Danny Manning, Scottie Pippen and Hakeem Olajuwon are some of the NBA stars who have participated in the camp in the past.

NBA players expected to attend this year include Marcus Camby of the Toronto Raptors, Chris Dudley of the Portland Trail Blazers and Erick Dampier of the Indiana Pacers.

College players who have signed up for this year include UCLA's Jelani McCoy and J.R. Henderson and Stanford's Tom Young.

The camp is open to the public and there will be no admission charge.

KAYAKERS TRY OUT: Ten junior kayakers from Hawaii will travel to the Lake Placid Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, N.Y., this week to take part in the United States Canoe and Kayak Summer Developmental Camp and try out for spots on the USCKT Junior World Team.

The boys are Andy Bussey, Aaron Creps, Kahi Paccaro, Brett Shimabuku and Mike Stock. The girls are Tia Blankenfeld, Makena Coffman, Mahealani Lum, Pua Scott and Christina Turney.

In the West Coast Trials last month in Seattle, Stock won the 500-meter K-1, followed by Shimabuku, Bussey and Paccaro. Stock also took first in the 1,000-meter K-1 race, with Bussey, Shimabuku, Paccaro and Creps finishing second through fifth.

In the girls' 500-meter K-1, Turney took first and Lum second. Blankenfeld, Coffman and Scott finished fourth through sixth.

MOVERS WIN: Kyle Higuchi's leadoff home run in the seventh inning broke a 4-4 tie and sent the Hawaii Island Movers on to an 8-4 victory over the Hiroshima Big Six Sunday in Hiroshima, Japan.

Troy Yoshimasu added a two-run homer for the Movers in the eighth inning.

Yesterday's game against Kansai was rained out.
