Kaiser High pool open
to public during summer

I believe that the renovation work to the Kaiser High School pool was recently completed. Is the pool open to the public and, if so, what days and times? I was referred to the school's athletic director by the school office for this information but no one answers the phone.

When we called the school, we were referred to the city Parks and Recreation Department's Koko Head District office. It turns out that the parks department oversees the pool during the summer.

It also turns out that Kaiser's is the only public school pool on Oahu available now for use by the general public.

The pool opened Wednesday. Through Aug. 23, public swim hours are 3:30-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 3-5 p.m. Friday; and 1-5 p.m. Saturdays and holidays. Lap swims are 6-8 p.m. Monday-Wednesday.

The parks department no longer opens that pool for public use during the school year because of a lack of use and shortage of funds.

Most recently, the Waianae High pool also was used by the parks department, but that was discontinued because of maintenance problems, a spokesman said.
