


Chill red flame seedless grapes for an easy, refreshing addition to start-of-summer picnics Saturday. Or nibble the globes with cheese and wine to toast Friday's full moon. This weeks special
is fresh off the vineBuy red flame seedless grapes, a produce best-buy at 79 cents a pound at Safeway, and $1.29 at IGH (Independent Grocers of Hawaii) stores and Star Markets.
Look for plump grapes that are firmly attached to their stems. Grapes should be deeply colored, with no sign of green. Store them, unwashed and in a plastic bag, in the refrigerator for up to a week.
Be sure to wash the fruit thoroughly before eating out of hand or adding to salads and desserts. Fresh grapes provide small amounts of vitamin A and a variety of minerals.
Other produce bargains include two cobs of white corn for $1 at Times Super Market; Island Fresh sweet potatoes at 2 pounds for 98 cents at Daiei; and tomatoes for 77 and 78 cents a pound at Sack N Save and at Daiei, respectively.
Sack N Save also offers watermelon for 19 cents a pound to Maika'i Card holders, 29 cents to others.
For the weekly menu, one might saute kajiki (Pacific Blue marlin) steaks at $2.99 a pound for a family pack at Star Markets; grill portobello mushroom caps at $2.99 for a 6-ounce package at Safeway; and stir-fry boneless chuck steak for $1.78 to Foodland Maika'i Card holders, $2.29 to others
Also, saute a'u (marlin) fillet for $3.49 and $3.99 a pound at Foodland and Safeway, respectively.
Grill chicken breast at 99 cents a pound at Safeway, then slice it onto a summer salad.
Saute ahi tombo fillet for under $4 a pound at Daiei and Star, and barbecue or braise crossrib steaks and roast for $1.88 a pound at Safeway.
