FOXBORO, Mass. -- Defensive tackle Pio Sagapolutele, a former Pac-Five standout, was released yesterday by the NFL's New England Patriots after the AFC champions signed free-agent defensive tackle Henry Thomas to a two-year contract. Patriots waive Sagapolutele,
sign ThomasSagapolutele, a seven-year pro out of San Diego State, had three sacks in his only season with the Patriots. He is about 20 pounds heavier than the 278-pound Thomas, and not as quick.
Thomas had eight stellar seasons with Minnesota, playing in the 1991 and 1992 Pro Bowls, and spent the last two with Detroit. In 149 NFL games, he has 721/2 sacks and 11 fumble recoveries.
JUNIOR GOLFERS: Ryan Masuda and Landon Chang shared the first-round lead of the Maxfli PGA Junior Championship at the Hilo Municipal Golf Course.
Masuda and Chang, both from Hilo, shot par-71s to head the 15-17 boys division by a stroke. In the girls 15-17 flight, Oahu's Randi Sakihara carded a 73 for a two-stroke lead while Chaz Mansom Inouye of Maui was the boys' 13-14 leader by three strokes after a first-round 72.
Hilo's Melissa Takahashi led the girls' 13-14 flight by a stroke with a 75. Other leaders were Darene Matsuoka (girls' 11-12), Troy Higashiyama (boys' 11-12), Kristen Atebara and Joy Kim (girls' 10-under) and David Kim (boys' 10-under).
KENDO TOURNAMENT SUNDAY: The 12th annual Leeward Oahu Kendo Tournament is scheduled for Sunday at the Mililani District Park Gym.
Clubs from several islands will compete in the ancient Japanese martial art of sword fencing from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Admission is free.

PIGSKIN PIGOUT: The second annual Rainbow Pigskin Pigout, a fund-raiser for the University of Hawaii football program, is scheduled for Murphy's Bar & Grill on July 17.
UH coaches will appear at the benefit, which features live entertainment, dinner, refreshments and an auction.

FLAG FOOTBALL ON TAP: Teams are being sought for the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Hawaii Flag Football League fall season.

INLINE SKATE CLASSES: The Wheel Thing inline skate program is offering beginner training and fitness workout courses through the University of Hawaii and Downtown YWCA next month.
The beginners' "How Not To Crash Course" at UH is a four-week course offered for ages 16 and older Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The cost is $65 for UH students, $85 for others.
The YWCA's beginner's course is for ages 6 and up and will be held in two sessions from 6 to 8 p.m. July 8 and 15, and July 22 and 29. The cost is $47.50 for YWCA members, $50 for nonmembers.
The fitness course at UH is set for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 10, 17 and 24 ($55 students/$65 others). There also is a skill builder course at UH from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 11 and 18 ($45 students/$55 others).

VOLCANO RUNS: Applications are available for the 15th annual Kilauea Volcano Wilderness Runs, a three-race event July 26.
Scheduled are the Volcano Marathon, Crater Rim 10-kilometer run and Kilauea Caldera 5-mile run/walk, all starting at Volcanoes National Park. The races benefit the Volcano Art Center.
