Jiu-Jitsu championships set

The Gracie Jiu-Jitsu State Championships will be held Sunday at the Kaiser High gym.

The registration fee is $40 by Saturday, $60 Sunday. Weigh-in and packet pickup is from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday at Gracie Academy, 1211 Koko Head Avenue, and from 8-9 a.m. at Kaiser.

Competition begins at 10:30 a.m. Admission is $5 for adults; children under 15 admitted free.

VULCAN BASEBALL SCHOOL: For the first time the Vulcan-Hawaii Baseball School is offering a session for players, ages 13-17.

The session for older players runs from 6:30-9 p.m. June 17 (hitting), June 18 (pitching) and June 19 (fielding). Students can participate in one or two sessions at $25 each or all three for $65.

Two sessions are offered for younger players, June 16-19. Times are 8:30 a.m.-noon for ages 7-9 and 1-4:30 p.m. for ages 10-12.

Fees are $80 for Junior Vulcan Club members, $90 for others. The fee includes cap, T-shirt, photo and report card.

ALL SPORTS CLINIC: Stovall's first All Sports Clinic in Hawaii is June 20-22 at the Ilikai Hotel.

The clinic features six sports: football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, soccer and golf. The speakers include players and coaches from the NFL, NCAA, NAIA and other pro levels.

The sessions are open to the public. The two general sessions are on optimum performance and strength training, and peak performances. The cost is $50.

RELAY FOR LIFE BENEFIT: Teams are needed for the HMSA-sponsored Relay for Life, a benefit for the American Cancer Society that will be held statewide.

The benefit involves teams of 10 taking turns walking, running, dancing (or any other forward motion) around a track to collect its minimum $1,000 in pledges.

Events will be held at War Memorial Stadium on Maui, June 21-22, at the Hilo High School track June 21-22, at Kapiolani Park and Kapolei Park on Oahu, June 28-29, and at the Old Kona Airport soccer field June 28-29.

BODYBUILDING CHAMPIONSHIP: The 19th annual Hawaiian Islands Bodybuilding Championship is scheduled for June 21 at the Blaisdell Center Concert Hall starting at 6:30 p.m.

Also that evening, the Junior Hawaiian Islands Championship and the NPC Hawaii Fitness Contest will be staged.

Guest posers will include Kevin Levrone, who placed second in the 1995 Mr. Olympia contest and third in 1996, and Kim Chizevsky, who won the Ms. International title at the 1996 Arnold's Classic and the 1996 Ms. Olympia title.
