Midday watering blamed
on faulty sprinkler part

With summer here, why does the state feel it's OK to blast 10 huge sprinklers on the Diamond Head side of the state Capitol in the middle of the day? The state and city should lead by example and conserve water by watering early or late in the day.

Most state properties are automatically watered when it's least inconvenient to the public, which means generally during non-daylight hours.

However, there were problems with the automatic controller on that part of the lawn and groundskeepers had to operate the sprinklers manually, said Dan Quinn, assistant administrator for the Department of Land and Natural Resources's State Parks Division.

"They have been reminded to do (the irrigation) first thing in the morning," Quinn said last week.

If you believe any individual, business or government agency is wasting water, call the Honolulu Board of Water Supply's Waste Water Hotline at 527-6126, between 7:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays.

Someone will call up the alleged water-waster, pass on the complaint, then follow up. Sometimes there are mitigating circumstances, but each complaint is logged. If someone gets more than two complaints, then a written notice will be sent, said water board spokeswoman Denise DeCosta.

"If it gets bad enough, we can shut off the water," she said, though that's never happened. "Most people are very responsible," she said.
