Way to cook!: Samuel L. Gaoiran represented the Hawaii/
Pacific Islands region in the national culinary competition of Jeune Commis (young cooks), sponsored by the Cahine des Rotisseurs, June 7 at Kendall College in Chicago. Gaoiran had 3-1/2 hours to prepare a 3-course menu for four people using items from a "mystery basket," containing basic ingredients.
To qualify, contestants had to be 25 years-old or younger and could have no more than three years of kitchen experience.
Gaoiran, a student at Kapiolani Community College's culinary arts program, works as an apprentice cook at Hilton Hawaiian Village. He is a resident of Ewa Beach and a graduate of Baldwin High School on Maui.
Welcome back: Yami Yogurt returns Friday to Windward Mall with a few new menu items, including a blend of fresh fruits and vegetables called "Juice Haven" and a cool shake menu. The store is on the lower level, JC Penney wing, across the Disney Store and next to Orange Julius.
ServSafe Sanitation Certification Course: Employees and employers in the food industry are encouraged to attend the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations' workshops teaching people how to handle food properly and safely. Students who complete the workshops successfully will receive a certification by the National Restaurant Association. The 16-hour workshop will be held from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; Kapiolani Community College. Training includes textbook, materials and test.
