Birthday feast fresh off the farm

The Hawaii Farm Bureau is celebrating its 50th Anniversary in high style Monday at Roy's Restaurant in Hawaii Kai, and you're welcome to join in.

It'll cost $100 a head, but you'll feast on a four-course dinner featuring local tomatoes and kalua pig; Puna goat cheese, citrus and green salad with Maui onion vinaigrette; crab-stuffed Big Island tenderloin; and tapioca with marinated Hawaiian fruits.

Chefs Roy Yamaguchi, Gordon Hopkins, Alan Wong, Peter Merriman and Philippe Padovanni will prepare the fare. Master Sommelier Chuck Furuya and Randy Caparoso will select the wines.

C&K one last time

C&K. They're back, but only for one last concert. Cecilio and Kapono's Aloha concert will be 8 p.m. July 3 at Aloha Stadium

For 25 years the sound of Cecilio Rodriguez and Henry Kapono was celebrated by fans not only in Hawaii, but around the world. The duo will relive the good times in a final performance.

Reserved stand tickets are $17.50, $27.50 and $37.50; general admission field tickets are $37.50. Tickets go on sale Friday at the stadium box office and Connection outlets, including Blaisdell Box Office.

Scholarship: The Hawaii chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood is offering the Hawaii Cottey College Scholarship for female high school graduates.

Women wanting to attend the two-year college in Nevada, Mo., will get a scholarship of up to $5,000 if chosen.

To be eligible, candidates must show financial need, have personal recommendations, be involved in extra-curricular activities, and be an entering freshman.

Colorful take on history

Nine winners were selected from more than 800 entries in the Historic Hawai'i Foundation Keiki Color a Historic Building contest. They are:

Ages 2-4: Regan Balmoja, first; Taylor Nemiroff, second; and Jade, whose last name is not known, third.

Ages 5-7: Casey Tanabe, first; Kang Woo, second; Zachary Goo, third.

Ages 8-11: Jaime Keliikuloa, first; Jennifer Louie, second; Charrelle Lester, third.

The three first-place winners received $100 U.S. Savings Bonds. All winners also received prizes from contest sponsors.

The annual contest helps children learn about the importance of historic buildings, architectural detail and their cultural heritage.

You can lick a movie monster

Frightening figures from movies will appear on a set of 32-cent U.S. stamps in October as part of National Stamp Collecting Month. The monsters depicted are Dracula, the Mummy, the Phantom of the Opera, the Wolf Man. and the infamous Frankenstein Monster. We see Bela Lugosi as Dracula, Lon Chaney as the Phantom of the Opera, Lon Chaney Jr. as the Wolf Man, and Boris Karloff in his roles as the Mummy and Frankenstein's Monster. Each pane of stamps will include a photo of the actor and his signature.

New features at writers conference

Journalist Carl Bernstein, directors Ron Howard and James Brooks, authors John Saul and Elmore Leonard, and screenwriter David Koepp, "The Lost World" and "Mission Impossible," head a list of heavyweight talent at the fifth annual Maui Writers Conference over Labor Day Weekend.

The conference allows new and aspiring writers to meet and learn from today's stars in the field of literature, among them Pulitzer Prize and Academy Award winners, and dozens of best selling authors and screenwriters.

A primary attraction at the conference is the second annual Manuscript Marketplace, and for the first time, the Maui Writers Retreat.

The Manuscript Marketplace, open to the general public year round, allows attendees to showcase their works in progress to agents and editors. The deadline for submissions for the Manuscript Marketplace is July 1.

This year you may enter the Manuscript Marketplace even if you can't attend the conference.

Conference attendees pay $85 per manuscript resume; nonconference writers pay $159 per resume.

Maui Writers Retreat writers and producers will teach students in small gatherings in the six days preceding the conference. There will be morning workshops and meetings with leading agents, editors, and film executives, as well as afternoon mentoring sessions.

Instructors in this year's Maui Writers Retreat -- Aug. 23-28, $1,175 -- include Howard, Koepp, Stephen de Souza, ("Die Hard"), Randi Mayhem Singer (Mrs. Doubtfire"), Saul (The Blackstone Chronicles), Dan Millman (Way of the Peaceful Warrior), Jack Canfield (Chicken Soup for the Soul), Terry Brooks (The Sword of Shannara), and Richard Rashke (The Killing.)

A $500 deposit is due with the application by July 1 with the balance payable by July 15.

Cole facts for symphony concert

Grammy award winner Natalie Cole will preform with the Honolulu Symphony on Saturday, Aug. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Waikiki Shell.

Tickets for "Natalie Cole -- An Unforgettable Evening with the Honolulu Symphony" are $20 for lawn seating, $50 for the second terrace, and $75 for the first terrace. Tickets are on sale at the Blaisdell box office and all Connection outlets.

Maui festival opens
slack key celebration

Slack-key music returns to Maui when Bank of Hawaii's "Bankoh Ki-Ho'Alu" occurs at noon June 15 at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.

Featured artists include George Kuo, back-to-back winner of Hoku awards for instrumentals, Brother Noland, Marin Pahinui, Cyril Pahinui and Randy Lorenzo, as well as Maui artists Pekelo Cosma and 14-year-old Ikaika Brown.

There will be Kiho'alu festivals on Oahu (August 17 at Bishop Museum) and Kauai (Nov. 9 at the Kauai Mariott Hotel).

Admission is free.
