Faulty police procedure?
Call HPD Internal Affairs

I was involved in a hit-and-run accident in January. I was too busy working to do anything about this sooner, but I want to file a complaint against a police officer who I believe threw away evidence in the case. Whom can I contact?

The Honolulu Police Department's Internal Affairs Division. Call 529-3286.

The Honolulu Police Commission looks into charges that an officer was threatening or physically or verbally abusive, but only if they're lodged within 60 days of an alleged incident.

Complaints about police procedures, including mishandling of evidence, or complaints more than 60 days old are reviewed by HPD's Internal Affairs.

You must file a written complaint, accompanied by a photo ID. The complaint will need to be notarized, said Internal Affairs Det. D. Hasegawa. Several detectives are notaries, she said.

A detective then will be assigned to a case, which usually takes a maximum 60 days to investigate. "We don't make recommendations. We just do fact-finding," Hasegawa said.

The case is reviewed by an administrative review board, made up of deputy and assistant police chiefs, who decide whether a complaint is sustainable. "Disposition is set from there," Hasegawa said.
