If Tim Carey is going to play football for the University of Hawaii this fall, it's going to cost him about $8,000. UH decides to revoke
Carey's scholarshipThat's the going rate of out-of-state tuition for one semester at UH and is the price Carey will have to pay now that Rainbows athletic director Hugh Yoshida has decided to revoke the UH quarterback hopeful's athletic scholarship.
Carey was arrested in a Chinatown gambling raid last month. He pleaded no contest to the charges and paid a $200 fine. The senior transfer from Stanford University also was placed on probation for one year by the athletic department and will be required to perform community service.
Carey was not available for comment Friday night. He indicated to Yoshida that he would remain with the team.
To those who have questioned its strength of schedule, the University of Hawaii Wahine volleyball team has two words regarding this season: "Don't bother." Wahine nonconference schedule
might be the best in the countryThe Wahine have five nonconference matches against five teams that finished in the Top 25 last season, including two road contests at defending NCAA champion Stanford and former Big West Conference nemesis Long Beach State.
"I think our nonconference schedule might be the best in the country," said Hawaii coach Dave Shoji, beginning his 23rd season. "It's comparable to anyone's, especially with two road matches late in the year that are going to be tough to win at Long Beach State and Stanford."
Also on the schedule is another former Big West rival, Pacific, emerging West Coast power Loyola Marymount and surprising Kansas State. Making its annual trip to the islands is six-time national champion UCLA, which missed out on postseason play for the first time ever last season.
Hawaii opens the season with an Aug. 23 match versus its alumnae. That's followed by the Wahine Challenge, Aug. 29 and 30, featuring Illinois State, Kansas State and San Francisco.
